➡️Southern Africa Floods

Weeks of intense and unrelenting rainfall have triggered catastrophic flooding across parts of southern Africa, including Mozambique, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. The floods have claimed the lives of hundreds and forced hundreds of thousands of people into temporary shelters for those displaced due to the weather. Some areas received an entire year’s worth of rain in just 10 days, an alarming amount that overwhelmed communities accustomed to less severe seasonal flooding. Vast areas of farmland have been destroyed, along with roads, bridges, water sources, and critical infrastructure, placing affected regions at heightened risk of hunger and disease outbreaks.

The damage is extensive and ongoing. In Mozambique, entire neighborhoods were submerged, and dozens of hospitals and clinics were destroyed. In South Africa’s Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces, as well as parts of Zimbabwe, floodwaters swept away key transportation routes, cutting off access to health care and aid. Humanitarian agencies warn of an escalating crisis as displaced families face limited food supplies, rising illness, and the loss of essential services.

The Africa Region of the Church of the Nazarene calls for prayer for all impacted: “As the Church, we stand together in compassion and faith. We call on our family across the region and beyond to lift Mozambique and all affected nations in prayer for comfort, provision, protection, and restoration.”

🙏We pray for each nation, community, and family impacted by these extreme rains and floods. God, protect all who are living displaced, unsure of when they can return home. Comfort all who are mourning the loss of loved ones. Through the ministry and response of local churches, may those in need find help and hope. Lord, hear our prayers.

➡️Praising God for Care for Fire Victims in Chile

Since January 1, a wave of wildfires has been burning across central Chile, causing widespread damage. Nearly 800 fires have already scorched close to 50,000 hectares of land. By January 19, reports confirmed at least 18 people had died, 19 had been injured, and more than 50,000 people had to leave their homes in the Ñuble and Biobío regions. Around 250 houses have been destroyed. In response to the crisis, the Chilean government declared a state of catastrophe in both regions on January 18.

During this bleak situation, the work of the Church of the Nazarene in Chile has been a powerful witness of hope and compassionate presence. Through the Biobío District, in partnership with Nazarene Compassionate Ministries and Nazarene Youth International, a coordinated response has focused on easing immediate suffering while also nurturing hope for the future. Volunteers and response teams have been helping families clear debris, clean land devastated by the fires, pray with those who have lost their homes, and provide emotional and spiritual care amid the chaos. In addition, 400 families will be supported through distributions of food, hygiene items, and cleaning supplies, helping to meet basic needs as recovery efforts move forward.

“This intertwining of pain and hope is a reminder that even when fire destroys what has been built, solidarity, faith, and the faithful presence of others become a source of strength to keep moving forward—rebuilding not only homes, but lives as well,” shared Rev. Lorena Noé, NCM Coordinator for South America.

🙏God, we pray for each family and person who are mourning the loss of loved ones and those who have been displaced after these fires. Open avenues for aid and support for all who are in need. Send your Spirit’s presence and hope into the hearts of all who are struggling. Through these church relief projects, may those receiving assistance be pointed to you as the source of eternal help and comfort. Lord, hear our prayers.

➡️Showing Compassion through Emergency Relief Ministries

When disasters come, the world’s most vulnerable people don’t have safety nets; when homes and livelihoods are destroyed, there is often nowhere to go and no way to recover from the loss of income. Disasters make life harder for those already struggling to survive. NCM works with churches around the world to care for the most vulnerable individuals and families in their communities.

🙏We pray for those impacted by disasters. We ask that in the midst of great difficulties, you would provide those in need with hope, help, and healing. Lord, hear our prayers.

"The Work of Christmas"

When the song of the angels is stilled,
when the star in the sky is gone,
when the kings and princes are home,
when the shepherds are back with their flocks,
the work of Christmas begins:
to find the lost,
to heal the broken,
to feed the hungry,
to release the prisoner,
to rebuild the nations,
to bring peace among the people,
to make music in the heart.

➡️ Impact of Hurricane Melissa

This week, Hurricane Melissa—one of the strongest Atlantic storms on record—tore through the Caribbean, leaving a trail of destruction across Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Cuba, the Bahamas, and Bermuda. Confirmed deaths stand at almost 50, including at least 10 children in Haiti. In Cuba, more than 735,000 people evacuated or entered shelters. In Haiti, nearly 12,000 people have moved into emergency shelters.

In Jamaica, where Melissa made landfall as a powerful Category 5 storm, the majority of the island remains without power, and 25,000 people are displaced in shelters. Hospitals, roads, and other critical infrastructure were heavily damaged, hampering rescue efforts. The needs are great.

The Church of the Nazarene has congregations throughout the Caribbean. Nazarene Compassionate Ministries is beginning to coordinate shipments of Crisis Care Kits to Cuba. As communication is restored, Nazarene leaders in other impacted areas will assess needs and guide additional response efforts. These efforts will focus both on immediate relief and long-term rebuilding support.

🙏 Lord, our heart aches when we see the devastation brought by Melissa. We mourn with those who mourn. Be near to all who are in pain, and comfort those who have lost everything. Open channels for aid and relief to flow to the most impacted communities. Continually bring these island nations to our hearts, Lord. Inspire us to support them now, and long into the future, with our prayers and generosity. Lord, hear our prayers.

➡️ Hunger Grows for Children Around the World

According to the aid organization Save the Children, conflicts around the world have driven more than 63 million children into hunger this year, bringing the total number of children living with food insecurity to 118 million. Globally, one in six children lives in an area affected by conflict. In places like Sudan, Gaza, and Haiti, violence and instability have devastated farmland, disrupted markets, and forced families to flee their homes, cutting off access to food and livelihoods. Children are especially vulnerable to malnutrition and diseases that come with not having enough to eat.

Nazarene Compassionate Ministries supports people who are hungry through agricultural programs, farming support, emergency food distributions, and nutritional support. For children attending child development centers in local churches, snacks and meals help improve their health and ensure they can learn and grow.

🙏 Our God, we pray for children who are hungry around the world, especially those who are living in areas of conflict. While wars and violence bring danger and fear, they also disrupt the means by which children are fed. This vast challenge breaks our hearts. We pray for peace where there is war and aid for each hungry child. Open our eyes to the hungry in our own communities, and give us the ability to make a difference. Move in miraculous ways in the hearts of leaders throughout the world, and provide them with a desire to find ways to feed the hungry under their care. Lord, hear our prayers.

➡️ Praising God for Continued Relief in Alaska

In western Alaska, the remnants of Typhoon Halong caused catastrophic flooding earlier this month, forcing thousands of residents to evacuate their homes. Several villages were nearly destroyed, and more than 2,000 people were evacuated, carrying only one bag of personal belongings. As 1,200 evacuees settled temporarily in Anchorage, local Nazarene churches and compassionate ministry centers quickly mobilized to provide comfort and care.

With funds provided by Nazarene Compassionate Ministries, churches purchased plush blankets for evacuees and assembled Crisis Care Kits filled with essentials like soap and shampoo. Each blanket and kit included a card with encouraging scripture and contact information for nearby Nazarene churches and compassionate ministry centers in Anchorage and Wasilla. Local congregations are taking offerings to continue meeting long-term needs as families transition into permanent housing.

🙏 Lord, we thank you for these evidences of compassion shared with evacuees from the western Alaska floods. With each warm blanket and each Crisis Care Kit, may those who are displaced find hope to cling to—hope that comes from you. Encourage the volunteers who are serving, and open up many more opportunities for continued care and solidarity. Lord, hear our prayers.
