Today is a day traditionally known as "Holy Saturday".
These two passages are really the only Scripture we have that address this day. The day before were the horrifying events of Jesus' scourging, crucifixion and burial. But today, the Jewish leaders, calling Jesus an "impostor", wanted a guard set in place to keep any of Jesus' followers from any funny business at the tomb. This day, being a Sabbath day, meant rest. But as you can imagine, for those who followed Jesus, those who believed in him and had put their faith, their trust in him...this day was probably far from restful.
Jesus' earthly ministry was about three years. The Twelve, and all the others who followed him spent up to three years watching, listening, learning, and believing. They believed he was the one they'd been waiting for. They believed he was the Messiah, the Chosen One of God, who would come and lead them to freedom. And then they largely scattered as Jesus was put to death. Jesus told them of his return, but we know they didn't quite grasp all that he said. So this day had to have been a day spent in somber, anxious waiting.
I'm grateful that from where we sit in history, we know this isn't the end of Jesus' story. But I also think it's so good to reflect on what it might have been like for those who were actually there. This is a day where I try to spend at least a little time to try to put myself in the position of the disciples. I try to imagine the anguish they would have felt. So many thoughts running through their heads, so many questions...and yet, so much silence. I think it's fitting that the biblical record is largely silent about this day too.
I encourage you to sit in the uncomfortableness that today represents. High hopes dashed to the ground. Silence in a space of wanting for answers, with the image of the closed up tomb burned into their minds.
We know the glory and elation that the Resurrection would bring. But knowing that those who personally knew Jesus went through deep despair and confusion first makes that joy all the richer.
