We’ll be singing a beautiful hymn this Sunday called “The Summons" (TFWS 2130). If you’re not familiar with it—or even if you are—we invite you to click the link below and take a listen. But, before you click, please read the Origins and Meaning below.

The modern hymn "The Summons" (also known as "Will You Come and Follow Me") was written in 1987 by Scottish composer John L. Bell and the late Graham Maule, members of the ecumenical Iona Community in Scotland.

Origins and Meaning

• Radical Discipleship: Bell wrote the text to explore a mature, demanding call to follow Christ rather than a sentimental Sunday school promise.

• The Socratic Method: The first four stanzas are written in the first person from the perspective of Jesus, posing 13 direct, searching questions to the singer.

• The Response: The fifth and final stanza shifts to the singer's voice, offering a willing response to the divine call.

• The Melody: The text is paired with KELVINGROVE, a traditional Scottish melody named after a park and neighborhood in Glasgow.

We just wrapped up a sermon series on what it means to be courageous. I wonder if there is also room for us to be encouragers. Encouragement is the act of giving hope, support, and confidence to help someone face difficulties and to keep moving forward. The word “courage” means to infuse bravery or help someone build the ability to deal with challenges. Derived from the Greek roots meaning “to call alongside”, true encouragement is like walking beside someone through a hard time rather than shouting advice from a distance. The Bible contains many verses about building up, supporting, and encouraging the people around you. A great verse to encourage someone is Joshua 1:9 “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” It’s a good reminder that they are never alone in hard times. You are never alone during hard times as well.

With you on the journey,

NEW SERMON SERIES BEGINS THIS SUNDAY, AUGUST 30
"Transformed By Grace"
Worship Time: 9 AM

Series Overview
Grace is not merely a gift but God's invitation to a relationship that can change our lives and transform the world. In this series, we will delve into stories of transformation, connecting them to our everyday experiences. From feeling like outsiders to being part of a community, from fear to trust, from the “same old” to something creative and new – these are just a few of the transformations that God’s grace works in our lives. Say yes to grace and find new freedom in relation to yourself, others and even your personal and financial resources.
