Today was a great start to our Gospel meeting. Be sure to come visit us at 7 PM each weeknight this week!

This morning we started a new study, "Getting to Know the Lord's Church," and we began where the Bible begins: what is the church? Not a building. Not a denomination. Not an institution with an office somewhere. The word simply means the called out, the people the Lord Himself has added to the saved.

In the second service we looked at the difference between the church in the universal sense and the church in the local sense. You enter the universal body when the Lord adds you. You enter a local congregation when you place membership with brethren who have agreed to work and worship together. One comes by obedience to the gospel. The other comes by choice.

Here is something to consider this week. If the church is people, then the church is not something you attend. It is something you are. When your neighbors form an opinion about the Lord's church around here, they are going to form it by watching us.

Thank you to everyone who was here today, and a special thank you to our visitors. The door is open to you any Sunday.

We continue the study next Lord's Day. Worship at 9:15, Bible class at 10:15, worship at 11:00.

And mark your calendars: our fall gospel meeting with Lowell Sallee begins Sunday, August 23 and runs through Friday, August 28. Sunday at 9:15, 10:15, and 11:00 A.M., weeknights at 7:00 P.m

Tomorrow morning we begin a new study together: "Getting to Know the Lord's Church."

We use the word "church" all the time, and we do not always mean the same thing by it. So before we talk about what the church does, we are going back to the beginning to ask a simpler question: what does the Bible actually say the church is?

If you have ever wondered about that, or if you grew up somewhere with a different answer, you are welcome to come and study it with us. We are not asking anyone to take our word for anything. We are just going to open the book and read it together.

Worship 9:15 A.M.
Bible class 10:15 A.M.
Worship 11:00 A.M.

Be sure to come to services tomorrow.

At 9:15 we're in Acts 5, "The Kept Back Part of the Price." Ananias and Sapphira sold their land and brought part of the money to the apostles. Part of it. And if we are being honest with ourselves, that describes more of us than we'd care to admit. Our heart. Our time. Our talents. Our giving. Our enthusiasm. Is there something we've been holding back?

At 11:00 we turn the question around: "Would You Be Proud to Announce…?" We announce all sorts of things gladly. A new baby. A new job. A graduation. A retirement. Would you say with that same gladness that you're a Christian? A worshipper of God? A member of this congregation?

"For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes" (Romans 1:16, NKJV).

Sunday:
Worship, 9:15 a.m.
Bible Class, 10:15 a.m.
Worship, 11:00 a.m.

You don't have to dress up and you don't have to have it all together. Just come, and bring somebody with you if you can. We'll be glad to see you.

And mark your calendar. Our fall gospel meeting with Lowell Sallee is August 23 through 28.

“Doctrine” has a bad reputation these days. It sounds stiff. Cold. Like something that gets in the way of loving people.

But doctrine is just teaching and the teaching we’re talking about is Christ’s own. It’s how we know who He is, what He did for us, and what He’s asked of the people who follow Him. Take that away and all you’ve got left is opinion, and opinion has never saved anybody.

That’s where we’re headed tomorrow:

9:15 a.m. — “Doctrine Is Not a Dirty Word”
10:15 a.m. — Bible Class study on parables
11:00 a.m. — “Our Responsibility to Christ’s Doctrine”

Of everything you’ll do this week, these are the hours that matters the most. Come as you are, bring somebody with you, and we’ll be glad to see you.

“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” James 1:22 (NKJV)

Well, we made it to the end of another week. Some of you had good weeks. Some of you had hard ones. Either way, the Lord's mercies didn't run out on you "They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness" (Lamentations 3:23, NKJV).

Whatever this week handed you, lay it down before Him. He's not tired of hearing from you, and He's not finished with you.

Rest up and come worship with us this Sunday at Sycamore. The door is open and there's a seat for you. Come as you are.

Salt and Light

Today’s sermon was “Maybe I Will, or Maybe I Won’t Make a Difference”

During our lesson this, morning we opened the Sermon on the Mount to a question worth meditating on this week: does the Lord really call us to make a difference in the world around us?

Jesus didn’t leave it up for debate. “You are the salt of the earth… You are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:13-14, NKJV). Not might be. Not could be someday. You are.

Salt that loses its flavor is good for nothing. A lamp isn’t lit to be hidden under a basket, it’s set on a stand so the whole house can see. The Lord expects the difference we make to be visible, useful, and pointing others back to Him.

So the “maybe” isn’t really a question of whether we can make a difference. It’s a question of whether we will. Every conversation this week, every kindness, every moment of when no one’s watching, every bit of that is salt doing its work. That’s a light on a stand.

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16, NKJV).

Go be salt this week. Go be light. Someone around you is watching for it.

Grateful for all of those who were with us today!

Come worship with us this Sunday at 9:15 & 11:00 AM.

This week's lesson: “Do I make a difference?”
Matthew 5:13

Does the New Testament actually call upon us as Christians to make a difference in the world around us?

Everyone is welcome, please come as you are.

Your verse for the week, from Colossians 3:16:

"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord."

Dwell means live there, not just to visit on Sundays. A word that dwells richly shows up in how we speak, sing, and bear with one another.

Read the whole chapter tonight if you can. It's better in context, it always is.
