If you've been the victim of gossip, you're not alone, and surely you can attest that being on the receiving end is hurtful.
Why do people gossip? Gossipers justify their motives in various ways, but it ultimately comes down to low self-worth and a lack of personal integrity. They don't feel good about themselves (likely due to poor personal choices, i.e., gossiping about others), and they temporarily feel better by gossiping. People who gossip are often uninformed; they can't share anything of pertinent value, so they try to get attention by talking about others, typically someone they envy, someone who has something the gossiper does not.
It's important to remember that gossipers are often their own worst enemies. Studies reveal that those who engage in gossip suffer from high levels of anxiety. While they may feel a fleeting sense of popularity, it's a hollow victory. Those who betray trust by spreading disrespectful or defamatory information should not be trusted. Their actions not only cause pain to others but also tarnish their reputation.
The Bible warns repeatedly against the destructive power of gossip, emphasizing the importance of using our words to build others up rather than tear them down.
"A dishonest man spreads strife, and a whisperer separates close friends." Proverbs 16:28 ESV
"Whoever goes about slandering reveals secrets; therefore do not associate with a simple babbler." Proverbs 20:19 ESV
"Besides that, they learn to be idlers, going about from house to house, and not only idlers, but also gossips and busybodies, saying what they should not." 1 Timothy 5:13 ESV
"If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person's religion is worthless." James 1:26 ESV
"Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear." Ephesians 4:29 ESV
Psychologists suggest that when faced with gossip, ask, "Why are you telling me this?" The question effectively disrupts the gossiper's self-serving motives and kindly communicates that you are uninterested in gossip.
God warns against gossip. Psychologists warn against gossip. It's my prayer, hope, and encouragement that you'll take these warnings to heart. Refuse to participate in gossip, and don't lend your ears or trust to those who do.
God bless.
