Our grade schoolers heard that John the Baptist’s friends were worried because the crowds following him were getting smaller, while Jesus’ crowds were getting bigger. They thought it was a popularity contest! But John knew that becoming smaller, or less important, was actually a good thing because that meant Jesus was becoming bigger.

This week, our grade schoolers heard about a man named Zacchaeus. He was a short man who climbed a tree to be able to see Jesus above the crowds. Zacchaeus didn’t have very many friends because he was a tax collector, but Jesus saw him and loved him anyway. His love changed Zacchaeus’s heart, because Jesus can change things and people for the better.

On Sunday, our preschoolers heard a biblical parable that Jesus told about a shepherd with 100 sheep and one of them goes missing. He left the 99 sheep to go find the one who was missing. When he finds him, he joyfully carries him back to the flock, and throws a celebration party! We are the one sheep. When we stray, He comes seeking us and parties when we are returned to His flock!

This Sunday our grade schoolers learned of the time that Jesus helped Nicodemus understand what being born again means. He explained to him that when we accept Jesus’ payment on the cross for our sins, Jesus’ very Spirit, the Holy Spirit, comes to live inside of us! God’s Spirit actually makes us brand-new inside as if we are being born a second time.
