Hello all! It's the beginning of a new year and most churches are spending January in prayer and fasting. I wanted the kids to understand what that means and its importance.
Below is the activity we used in Childrenβs Church this past Sunday and I thought I'd share it here for you to use with your children if you'd like.
Give up ~ Fill up
Fasting Activity for Kids
Fasting is a way we empty ourselves of our own desires and distractions that keep us from God. It is a way we grow in our dependence on Him and our faith.
It isnβt recommended for young children to fast from meals for a long period of time, but there are safe ways kids can fast.
Instead of just giving something up, kids are encouraged to spend that time (instead of watching t.v. or playing video games, etc.) allowing God to fill them up with something to help them grow in Him.
This is meant to be a week-long fast (7 days) but can go longer if your child feels led to do so.
~Here is how it works~
Take two cups ~ one says GIVE UP and the other says FILL UP. Each day your child will draw one slip of paper from the GIVE UP cup to see what they will be fasting for the day and one slip of paper form the FILL UP cup to see what they will be doing to fill them up (memorizing scripture, reading their bible, prayer, etc.)
Turn this into a family fasting activity and join in with your kids and give up and fill up on the same things they are each day.
