Judy McNeish and Jody Sturgeon joyfully shared a check for $10,000 to Stephanie Dunlap, director of Whole Living Recovery.

Whole Living Recovery provides programs, structure, support, and a home for men and women recovering from addiction. Five houses are part of Whole Living, and repairs are inevitable.

This house has had large leaks and will need a new roof and the chimney removed. Your pledge dollars will help make this happen. This thank you is for you!

We give thanks for the ministry of the Center for New Beginnings Shelter and Services! Team 78, our seventh and eighth graders, were particularly moved when they had an opportunity to visit this ministry, and heard from those serving it faithfully!

In response, our teens are organizing a Paper Product Drive! On your shopping trips between now and June 10, please pick up extra paper towels, toilet paper, Kleenex, or laundry detergent to donate to the drive. You may drop off items in the Sanctuary and at the June 10 Picnic! Thank you for helping us love others well! Love, Team 78

Hymn 289 - On Pentecost They Gathered

On Pentecost they gathered
quite early in the day,
A band of Christ’s disciples
to worship, sing and pray.
A mighty wind came blowing,
filled all the swirling air,
And tongues of fire a glowing
inspired each person there.

The people all around them
were startled and amazed
To understand their language,
as Christ the Lord they praised.
What universal message,
what good news was here?
That Christ once dead is risen
to vanquish all our fear.

God pours the Holy Spirit
on all who would believe,
On women, men and children
who would God’s grace receive.
That Spirit knows no limit,
bestowing life and power.
The church formed and reformed,
responds in every hour.

O Spirit sent from heaven
on that day long ago,
Rekindle faith among us
in all life’s ebb and flow.
O give us ears to listen
and tongues a-flame with praise,
So folk of every nation
glad songs of joy shall raise.

Prayer of the Day

Holy God, who comes to us in breath, visits us from the throne of heaven, and sets us aflame with amazement and joy, You open our paths to new visions and guide our feet deeper into your wisdom. Give us faith to trust your presence; through Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Response 288 - Spirit of the Living God

Spirit of the Living God,
Fall afresh on me.
Spirit of the Living God,
Fall afresh on me.

Melt me; mold me; fill me; use me.
Spirit of the Living God,
Fall afresh on me.

Sermon - “Spirit Language”

Hymn 688 - Spirit of God, Descend upon My Heart

Spirit of God, descend upon my heart;
wean it from earth; through all its pulses move;
stoop to my weakness, mighty as thou art,
and make me love thee as I ought to love.

I ask no dream, no prophet ecstasies,
no sudden rending of the veil of clay,
no angel visitant, no opening skies;
but take the dimness of my soul away.

Hast thou not bid us love thee, God and King;
all, all thine own, soul, heart, and strength, and mind?
I see thy cross; there teach my heart to cling.
O let me seek thee, and O let me find!

Teach me to feel that thou art always nigh.
Teach me the struggles of the soul to bear,
to check the rising doubt, the rebel sigh.
Teach me the patience of unanswered prayer.

Teach me to love thee as thine angels love,
one holy passion filling all my frame;
the baptism of the heaven-descended Dove,
my heart an altar, and thy love the flame.

Affirmation of Faith

We trust in the Holy Spirit. The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith, sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor, and binds us together with all believers in the one body of Christ, the church. In a broken and fearful world, the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples, to unmask idolatries, to hear the voices of peoples long silenced, and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace. With believers in every time and place, we rejoice that nothing in life or death can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.

Doxology

Prayer of Dedication

Hymn 543 - God, Be the Love to Search and Keep Me

God be the love to search and keep me
God be the prayer to move my voice
God be the strength to now uphold me
O Christ, surround me O Christ, surround me.

Bind to myself the name of Holy
Great cloud of witnesses enfold
Prophets, apostles, angels witness
O Christ, surround me O Christ, surround me.

Brightness of sun and glow of moonlight
Flashing of lightning, strength of wind
Depth of the sea to soil of planet
O Christ, surround me O Christ, surround me.

Walking behind to hem my journey
Going ahead to light my way
And from beneath, above, and all ways
O Christ, surround me O Christ, surround me.

Christ in the eyes of all who see me
Christ in the ears who hear my voice
Christ in the hearts of all who know me
O Christ, surround me O Christ, surround me.

Sally and Steve Stilwell had the gift of sharing about their ministry at the Center for New Beginnings Shelter and Services for victims of Domestic Violence with Team 78! Joined by the shelter's director, Trisha Hufford, they learned about the shelter and what the resident's had endured.

Sally and Steve were moved to action when they heard Trisha speak at a First Presbyterian Church Lunch and Learn. Since then, they have helped 11 families in less than a year by collecting furniture donated to the shelter, and delivering it to residents' homes. Creating the opportunity of new beginnings.

In response, our teens are organizing a Paper Product Drive and Picnic! On your shopping trips between now and June 10, consider picking up extra paper towels, toilet paper, Kleenex, or laundry detergent to donate to the drive. Hymn 254 - That Easter Day with Joy Was Bright

That Easter day with joy was bright;
The sun shone out with fairer light
When, to their longing eyes restored,
The apostles saw their risen Lord.

He bade them see his hands, his side,
Where yet the glorious wounds abide,
The tokens true which made it plain
Their Lord indeed was risen again.

From every weapon death can wield,
Your own redeemed forever shield;
O Lord of all, with us abide
In this our joyful Eastertide.

Prayer of the Day

Loving God, as a mother, you nurture us and guide us. Enfold us now in your abiding presence, that we would know ourselves to belong to you — body, mind, and spirit; in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Affirmation of Faith - Apostles’ Creed [unison]

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day, he rose again. He ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
