Church of the Good Shepherd would like to honor the life and legacy of Thelma Barlow, a beloved member of our parish and a true servant of God and community.
For decades, Thelma embodied what it means to live one’s faith through action. Her devotion to this church was steady and unwavering. She did not simply attend — she served. She gave of her time, her strength, and her heart. Her presence in our pews, at our events, and in our shared moments of prayer was a constant blessing.
Beyond our church walls, Thelma’s impact on the community of Somers was immeasurable. For nearly 40 years, she faithfully served as a school crossing guard, protecting generations of children with her watchful eye and steadfast commitment to safety. So many in our town remember her firm kindness and the sense of security she provided each school day. The dedication of the “Thelma Barlow Crossing” stands as a lasting tribute to her remarkable service.
Thelma's commitment to young people extended through her leadership with the Boy Scouts of America, including Troop 228 and Troop 376. As a founder, leader, and commissioner, she mentored and inspired dozens of Eagle Scouts, shaping lives through guidance, discipline, and encouragement. The values she taught — integrity, service, faith, and responsibility — will continue to ripple through future generations.
Thelma was also a proud supporter of our local firefighters, honoring the legacy of her late husband, William Sr., and her son William Jr., both of whom served. She stood faithfully at Veterans Day commemorations and town events, always present, always engaged, always giving.
We remember her as a woman of deep faith, a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother, and a pillar of strength in this community. Her life reflected Christ’s call to serve others selflessly and wholeheartedly.
As a parish family, we give thanks for Thelma’s 94 years of life and for the countless ways she strengthened our church and our town. We pray that she now rests in God’s eternal peace, reunited with those who have gone before her. May her example inspire us to serve as she did — faithfully, humbly, and with unwavering love.
Rest in peace, Thelma. You will remain in our hearts forever.
