World News This Week in Prayer

Great truth teller, you birth prophets in the form of simple humans, animals big and small, craggy mountains, lazy streams, and wandering plants. You impart your wisdom and send your messengers into the world, to spread the news that is sometimes hard to receive. May we slow down in order to feel the truth in our bones.

Pope Leo XIV, Vatican City, released the encyclical “Magnifica Humanitas” which frames AI as the new industrial revolution and makes an appeal to “disarm AI” by removing it from military and economic interests. “Disarming does not mean renouncing technology, but preventing it from dominating humanity,” Pope Leo XIV said.

May we encounter the light of your love in one another.

At least two people were killed, and eight others were injured after a 900,000-gallon tank containing a hazardous chemical mixture ruptured at a packaging facility in Washington, USA. The tank contained a mixture called white liquor, which is used in paper-making processes and can cause severe burns when it comes into contact with skin.

May our prayers be a soothing balm for those who suffer.

Five villagers stuck in a flooded cave in central Laos for more than a week were found alive, but two others are still missing. Heavy rain triggered flash flooding that blocked the exit and trapped seven people, according to Lao and Thai rescue teams involved in the operation.

May there be a safe reunification with love at the forefront.

Officials in Uganda ordered that the country close its border with the Democratic Republic of Congo as its neighbor to the east struggles to contain an Ebola outbreak that has already crossed the border and killed more than 220 people across the two countries.

May we grieve those who have died as we strive to protect the lives of the vulnerable.

Deep within the increasingly fragile dry forests of Madagascar, an ecological tragedy is quietly unfolding. One of the island’s oldest and most deeply revered sacred baobab trees—a towering 1,200-year-old giant known affectionately to locals as Tsitakakantsa—is slowly dying, signaling the terrifying collapse of a species that has survived millennia.

May we hear the wail of Mother Earth as she mourns her loss.

Zambian law enforcement agents raided a house in the capital city of Lusaka and arrested ten people, who were allegedly involved in the illegal wildlife trade of over 550 kg (1,212 lbs) of ivory discovered at the property. Agents have spent more than 40 years investigating, documenting, and exposing illegal wildlife trafficking networks operating throughout Africa.

May we hold one another responsible in our actions that cause harm.

Police in Paris, France, are examining more than 100 allegations of mistreatment, physical violence and r**e of children as young as three by school monitors during lunch breaks, nap times and after-school activities, prosecutors have confirmed. Parents’ groups said they had fought for years for allegations to be taken seriously. They said failures in the recruitment process and checking of school monitors had allowed abuse to continue.

May we hold the safety of children and other vulnerable people as a sacred responsibility that belongs to all of us.

Holy One, lead us to your truth, your light, your healing, and your love for all the world. Amen.

World in Prayer this Week

We can think of intercession as expanding God’s being in every situation we open to Him.

– Sr Margaret Mary, SPB in “Seeking God in the Silence”

In intercession, we, the intercessors, need to know something of the circumstances to kindle our concern. God already knows it all, but it seems in the mystery of humanity, where God has given us free will, he will not bypass this and treat us like robots. Our love and concern open the way for God’s energy, the Holy Spirit, to flow into the world.

So, God, source of all life and being, on this day of Pentecost, when you first gave us the gift of your Holy Spirit, we bring our concerns for the world to you. We do this:

that your energy, light, and love may be unleashed to transform what is broken;

to heal who and what are wounded;

to make straight what is crooked and destructive;

to build up and enliven what is good and true;

that your will may be done on earth as it is in heaven.

In faith and trust: we thank you for fulfilling your promises

Lord in the stillness of our deepest hearts, beyond all words, lighten the darkness and protect…

those facing unremitting violence, unrest, and suffering in so many countries, including Thailand, Ukraine, Russia, Afghanistan, Mexico, Venezuela, Bolivia, Myanmar, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Lebanon, Israel, Gaza, the Gulf States, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Egypt, South Africa…

those mourning the dead and sick, and all working to contain and nurse those infected in the Ebola crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Kenya

those seeking to shine the light of truth, accountability, and justice where corruption, lies, and cronyism protect those in power or influence, including the USA, Australia, Italy, Israel, Russia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Iran, Iraq, and the UK

In faith and trust: we thank you for fulfilling your promises

God, ever merciful and full of forgiveness, compassion, and faithful love, bless, encourage, and give joy and strength…

all aid workers, whether paid or voluntary, who, forgetting themselves, help others in disaster zones and also in our local communities, often caring for the marginalized and forgotten

all those relatives, friends, and carers providing loving support for those seemingly lost in dementia, or living with life-limiting conditions

every act of kindness and love, that it may spread a web of love and peace in the world to counteract the malignant selfishness and greed so pushed by so many interests at this time of chaos, fear, and stress.

Empower all working to break down the seeming inability of so many in power or influence to hear and see that each one of us is made in your image. Inspire and protect all who work together, engendering hope and not hate.

In faith and trust: we thank you for fulfilling your promises

As we celebrate the sometimes uncomfortable and disturbing gift of your Holy Spirit, remind us again daily that your way is not the way of power and domination, but of self-giving love and sacrifice for all. Challenge our narrow and sadly often judgmental views and remind us that because you chose to forsake all to come as a helpless human, to live and learn and grow as we do, you enabled Easter to happen. Your death and resurrection opened the gateway to reconciliation with you that was lost when we chose to exercise our free will to turn away from you in our daily lives.

Give us the courage to say “Yes” to you, as Mary did when Gabriel came and disrupted her life with the news of what you wanted of her. This is a construction zone, for each one of us and also for your world. Transform us, by your light and love, and the transforming power of your Holy Spirit, into the people and world you created us to be.

In Jesus’ name, we share our prayers. AMEN.

World in Prayer This Week

When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. While he was going and they were gazing up toward heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. They said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up toward heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.” – Acts 1:9-11

Holy and Living God,

Like the disciples in Acts, we confess that we are often tempted to stand still, looking toward heaven.

When the world feels too heavy,
when the news comes too quickly,
when war and rumors of war pile on top of political conflict, climate crisis, and human suffering,
it is tempting to look away.

It is tempting to lift our eyes upward and hope that somehow faith will give us permission to escape the pain of the world.

But just as the angels spoke to the disciples, we hear the holy question again:
“Why do you stand looking up toward heaven?”

So, God, turn our eyes back toward the earth you love.

Turn our eyes toward leaders in the United Kingdom wrestling with division, distrust, and the hard work of public responsibility. Where leadership is fragile and trust is strained, cultivate humility, wisdom, and a deeper commitment to the common good.

Turn our eyes toward Iran, the United States, China, Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, Ukraine, Russia, and all places caught in the shadow of war. We pray for those making decisions that affect millions of lives. We pray for civilians who do not choose war, but bear its cost. We pray for children, families, soldiers, sailors, and all whose futures are being shaped by violence, fear, and uncertainty. Interrupt the logic that says power must always be proven through destruction.

Turn our eyes toward the Strait of Hormuz, where ships, oil, fertilizer, economies, and fragile peace all move through a narrow passage. Remind us that the world is more connected than we often admit. What happens in one sea, one border, one parliament, one battlefield, ripples outward into homes, grocery bills, hospital rooms, and dinner tables across the world.

Turn our eyes toward Mali, where foreign power, local conflict, and the wounds of instability continue to shape daily life. We pray for communities living amid competing armed groups and fragile promises of security. May the people of Mali know peace that is not imposed from the outside, but built with justice, dignity, and local hope.

Turn our eyes toward Venezuela, where questions of sovereignty and dignity are not abstract political debates, but matters of identity, history, and the future of a people. Guard every nation from the arrogance that treats other people as objects to possess, rather than neighbors to honor.

Turn our eyes toward the Philippines, where gunshots in the Senate remind us how quickly institutions can become places of fear. We pray for accountability without revenge, courage without chaos, justice without violence, and truth without political manipulation.

Turn our eyes toward India, where dangerous heat is already pressing upon bodies, farms, hospitals, neighborhoods, and those least able to escape it. We pray for those who labor outdoors, for the elderly, for children, for the poor, and for all who live where climate change is not a future possibility but a present danger.

And, O God, even as we turn toward suffering, keep us from despair.

Turn our eyes toward scientists and researchers developing paint that can cool homes and harvest water from the air. Let every act of holy imagination remind us that creation is not only groaning; it is also inviting us to partner in healing.

Turn our eyes toward educators, children, and communities who believe that the care of the youngest among us shapes the future of us all. Bless every classroom, every caregiver, every child-centered place where curiosity, tenderness, and belonging are being nurtured.

Turn our eyes toward forests where macaws return, toward conservationists who refuse to give up, toward every small sign that what has been damaged may yet be restored.

God, we do not want to stare into heaven to avoid the earth.
We want to look toward heaven just long enough to remember who you are,
and then look back around us to see where your Spirit is already at work.

Give us eyes that notice suffering without becoming numb.
Give us hearts that hold grief without surrendering hope.
Give us hands ready for the work of peace.
Give us the courage to speak truth, practice mercy, protect the vulnerable, and join your movement of wholeness in a fragmented world.

Christ has ascended, but Christ has not abandoned us.
The Spirit is still moving.
The work is still before us.
The world is still beloved.

So send us from this prayer not simply comforted, but redirected.
Not staring upward in fear or nostalgia,
but looking around with faith,
ready to love the world you so deeply love.

Amen.

World News This Week in Prayer

God of All of the Nations of the World, we are in awe at the beauty of the earth, the flowers and fruitfulness in springtime, the warmth of summer sunshine, the harvest of crops, and the turning colors of the deciduous leaves in autumn, the white snow and clear ice of winter. We are grateful for this home planet and the recent Artemis II photos from space of one world.

We marvel at the intricate interconnectedness of our environment with creatures, air, soil, and water. We pray for the environmental concerns of our world, where melting polar ice, floods, storms, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, mudslides, landslides, avalanches, wildfires, droughts, and chemical pollution continue to cause loss and devastation.

We join our requests and grateful praises with the words from the 19th century hymnwriter, Folliott Sandford Pierpoint, who wrote, “For the beauty of the earth, for the glory of the skies, for the love which from our birth over and around us lies.”*

Remembrances and Celebrations

May is Mental Health & Foster Care Awareness Month (USA)

May 1: International Workers’ Day
May 5: Cinco de Mayo
May 5: International Midwives’ Day
May 6-12: Nurses’ Week (U.S.)
May 8: World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day
May 8: Victory in Europe (V-E) Day
May 10: Mother’s Day (U.S.)

Lover of All, we pray for wisdom and skill for the helpers who befriend the oppressed, tenderly care for the sick and dying, comfort the bereaved, and minister hope to the despondent. Help us with the ability and influence we have been given to bring suitable and timely assistance where needed.

Wars and Military Conflicts with Widespread Effects

Israel and Southern Lebanon: survivors of Israel’s April bombing campaign against Hezbollah continue to search through the rubble to find remains of their loved ones.

U.S. and Iran: The April ceasefire continues to hold, with occasional challenges, while Pakistan has endeavored to moderate a more lasting peace agreement. The Strait of Hormuz continues as an unsafe passageway for large ships and tankers seeking to deliver their goods, which have been stuck in the waterway since the 28 February attacks on Iran by Israel and the U.S. The U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports continues. Transiting ships have no guarantee of safe passage, leading to devastating losses and shortages for the world’s supply chains.

Russia and Ukraine: A temporary ceasefire is scheduled by Russia for this weekend, 8 May to 10 May.

Sudan: the brutal civil war continues between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, causing widespread famine and destruction.

Peacemaker, Giver of Hope, Dispenser of Mercy, we ask for peace and security, for ceasefires, and safe passage for displaced persons and vital resources stuck in transit.

Creature Rescues

Germany: A humpback whale nicknamed “Timmy” was stranded for almost a month off the Baltic coastline and eventually rescued, towed, and released into the North Sea.

Hawaii (U.S.): After recent torrential rains on the north shore of Oahu sent rushing floodwaters in the middle of the night, a rancher and two friends bravely rescued fifteen horses from catastrophe in the paddock at Dillingham Ranch in Waialua.

Wisconsin (U.S.): Fifteen hundred beagles bred for research and laboratory testing are being rehomed through the Wisconsin Humane Society after protests against Ridglan Farms in Dane County.

One Who Gives Strength and Courage, help us notice creatures in harm’s way and rescue them, or acquire help from those who are skilled in rescuing. Teach us to love and care for the creatures you have created.

We listen attentively and acclaim with the psalmist, “All creatures look to you to give them their food at the proper time. When you give it to them, they gather it up; when you open your hand, they are satisfied with good things. When you hide your face, they are terrified; when you take away their breath, they die and return to the dust. When you send your Spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the ground. May the glory of the Lord endure forever.” (Psalm 104:27-31 NIV) Amen.
