In Genesis chapter 6, we see that humanity is the furthest from God that it had ever been, so far gone that “every inclination of the human mind was nothing but evil all the time”. People were trying to showcase themselves as being more impressive and important than God. He was deeply grieved, heartbroken that His creation, His children were so normalized to evil that it was more comfortable than choosing to seek Him.
God decided to wipe the slate clean. It’s not because He’s cruel. Scripture says God saw the evil mankind was pursuing and loves us so much that He was grieved to His heart by all the self-destructive decisions humanity was making. Instead, He stepped in to right the ship because the opposite is apathy, since a god that doesn’t deal with evil is simply indifferent and uncaring.
However, through all the sin and violence and corruption, one life shined. Frankly, verse 8 sums up the Gospel in one sentence, “Noah, however, found favor with the Lord.” Noah lived for an audience of One, not for the favor of the world which so clearly had lost its way. Noah had faith in the Lord and was shown grace.
In short, the world was clapping for itself, showing off what they thought was power, but Heaven wasn’t applauding. Because sin had become normal, God’s heart was breaking. But the point through it all, even as the wages of our sins had been decided, if we have faith in God, we are thrown a cross-shaped lifeline before the storm even starts.
