Bible for the People: A Rooted Community Project Resources and conversation to make the Bible more accessible to everyone

This page is an outgrowth of the Rooted Community, a spiritual family in Granite City, Illinois - AND this page is a resource for anyone and everyone. Here we will share all sorts of engaging (even fun!) resources to help you explore the Bible. We’re not looking for the perfect translation, the right answer to every question, or the best clobber passages to win arguments. Our wild, wonderful, anci

ent, living text deserves better than that, and so do all those who read it. Stick with us as we build something new, and by all means - comment, ask questions, let us know what you think of the resources you find here! If you would like to visit The Rooted Community in person, we welcome you to worship Sundays at 10 a.m.

When we talked about Thomas I said John 14:6 could use a whole sermon. Someday that will happen, until then here is some food for thought.

Our purity systems, even those established with the best of intentions, do not make us holy. They only create insiders and outsiders. They are mechanisms for delivering our drug of choice: self-righteousness, as juice from the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil runs down our chins. And....

It's been a while! April has been wild but it's time to get back to regular posting - starting with this interview with Rabbi Nancy Fuchs-Kreimer who focuses on interfaith dialogue. Here she talks about the different ways that Jews, Muslims, and Christians process the story of Abraham, Sarah and Hagar. Where we're coming from shapes how we read!
[Context Matters] Rabbi Nancy Fuchs-Kreimer: Speaking Across Differences (Part 2)

This is the second half of my conversation with Rabbi Nancy. We start with the affects of 9/11 on her multi-faith conversations. Then we move to the way such conversations have influence her career. And we finally talk about the Muslims, Jews, and Christians interpret the Sarah and Hagar narratives....

Want to dig even deeper into how people have tried to make sense of Job's story?

Western philosophy begins, not with Plato, but elsewhere, and earlier, with the Book of Job. That is because the problem of evil is the central point where philosophy begins, and where it threatens to stop. So, if the task of philosophy is to show how the world is, or can be made, rational, then it....

Today's song of lament..something different.
I'm not particularly a fan of Southern Gospel, but this hymn has been running through my head over the last several days and Vestal Goodman has the best version. Vestel and her husband Howard, both gone to glory now, were titans in the Southern Gospel world, as part of the Happy Goodmans, and also as solo artists. Vestal was a belter, a powerhouse, someone who could fill a room with her voice.

This weekend I stood beside the bed of one of my oldest and dearest friends who is nearing the end of her long journey with Huntington's disease. I told her old stories, rubbed her arms, stroked her face, quietly prayed an Anglican prayer for the dying over her; cried a little, laughed over memories with her family and other friends.

And then I got in my car and drove home. And I belted this song along with Vestal. Because sometimes, you just have to shout your lamentations to the only One who really understands.

[Exploring My Strange Bible] Making of the Bible Part 1 - The Making of the Old Testament Books

In this series we explore how the Bible was written and the long process of its composition and manuscript history. The bible is a book with a very traceable history, it was not written in secret. The authors of these texts were of course humans, but they also claimed that through these human words....
