While in my personal devotion I saw a little note in Leviticus 2:13 after it says, “And every offering of your grain offering you shall season with salt; you shall not allow the salt of the covenant of your God to be lacking from your grain offering. With all your offerings you shall offer salt.” That note told me to see Matthew 5:13-16 where Jesus calls us the “salt of the earth” in His Sermon on the Mount. This made me realize what exactly it is to be salty.
You see in the Old Testament mixing salt with the grain was a way of preserving the wheat, it was a way to keep the yeast from spoiling and rotting the grain and making it last. Salt was a symbol of Gods promises, purity, truth, preservation, wisdom, and permeance (His everlasting nature). Salt was a symbol of Gods righteousness and His presence in people’s lives. While yeast is seen as a representation of sin and selfish desire because it continues to expand and consume until everything is consumed.
I’m reminded of an object lesson I saw in science class in Jr. High. You can fill a container right up to the very top with wheat and it will look full, but if you start to pour salt on top of the grain and shake it slightly those grains of salt will work their way through the gaps in the grain and disappear until it is completely saturated. In Matthew 5:13 Jesus says, “we are the salt of the earth.” This isn’t because we deserve it or earned but it’s because God through His Holy Spirit is poured out on us like the salt on a wheat offering and mixed in with us surrounding us becoming inseparable with us, becoming part of us as a whole. This salt preserves us, purifies us, and keeps the rot of sin at bay. When we feel inadequate or fail in our walk with God we don’t need to despair, worry, or beat ourselves up, instead we need more of Him more of His salt mixed in with us. We do this through study of His Word (the Bible), prayer, worship, seeking His truth. Essentially we are adding more of Him to our lives and becoming saltier. I want to encourage you all to intentionally add more of God into your life and become saltier, become a brighter light to the world around you, and above all else stay salty my friend.
