The Granger Brethren Church is a member of the Unity of Brethren, Unitas Fratrum, that was founded in 1457 in the Kingdom of Bohemia. It is a Protestant denomination that predates the Lutheran reformation. Inspiration orginated in the preaching and martyrdom of Jan (John) Hus whose diligent studies of the Scriptures and influential clerical leaders of his day convinced him that the Roman Catholic

Church had departed from the teachings of the New Testament. He was a professor and popular preacher across the Bohemian and Moravian lands. His heroic witnessing for the truth inspired many followers. He devoted a large part of his time to writing both in Czech and Latin and for this contribution to the Czech language he was called "the father of his native tongue". For his objections and outspokeness, Jan Hus was burned at the stake on July 6, 1415. Persecution of the Hus followers began soon after his death and continued well into the 19th century. The people were given edicts of either renouncing their evangelical faith or leaving the country. Burdened by these mandates, the Brethren were forced to worship in secret. The longing for freedom of religion and the search for a true Christian life eventually drove the Brethren to leave their homeland and begin to establish settlements in America. As early as 1848, the Brethren began to emigrate to Texas through the influences of Josef Bergman and Josef Lesikar who first brought settlers to Austin County. It is believed that the first Czech Protestant worship service conducted in Texas occurred in 1855 in Fayetteville. The first congregation of the Czech-Moravian Brethren in Texas was organized in 1864 in Wesely. Adapted from the "Unity of the Brethren in Texas (1855-1966), Unity of the Brethren; (1970)

Jesus regularly withdrew from the crowds because He understood the true source of His strength. Throughout the Gospels, you see this pattern again and again. After healing the sick, after teaching thousands, and even before major decisions, Jesus would withdraw to quiet places to pray. He wasn’t driven by urgency or pressure. He was anchored in communion with the Father.
The Son of God Himself chose solitude, not as escape, but as alignment.
If Jesus, who was perfectly in tune with God, still prioritized time alone in prayer… what does that say about us? We often try to pour out without ever being filled. We chase productivity, impact, and approval - but neglect the very place where clarity, peace, and direction are formed.
Solitude with God is where noise fades, identity is restored, and the soul is strengthened. Jesus didn’t just model miracles - He modeled dependence. If your life feels loud, scattered, or spiritually dry, the answer may not be to do more. It may be to step away - and to sit with the Father.

So much happened on the Thursday before Jesus' crucifixion that it's impossible to discuss it in depth with just one post. The morning started with Jesus sending Peter and John to Jerusalem, instructing them concerning the location where they would partake in the Passover meal.
On Thursday evening after sunset, Jesus and the disciples entered the upper room that had been prepared for them. Jesus began by washing the disciples' feet. This demonstration of love and humility served as an example to the disciples.
"And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you." (John 13: 14-15)
After this, Jesus and the disciples gathered around the table to eat the Passover meal. Jesus took both the bread and cup and blessed them. I feel sure the disciples didn't fully understand all Jesus was saying to them as he said, " Take this and eat it, for this is my body," and concerning the cup, "Each of you drink from it for this is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice to forgive the sins of many."
It was during this meal that Jesus indicated that Judas would betray him. Jesus also told Simon Peter, "I tell you the truth, Peter—before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will deny three times that you even know me."
After this, Judas got up and left to carry out his betrayal. It was then that Jesus said to the remaining disciples:
"So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples." (John 13: 34-35)
This commandment is why we often refer to this day as , 'Maundy Thursday.' The word, 'maundy,' is derived from the Latin word, 'mandatum,' which means mandate or commandment. It was on Thursday Jesus gave us a new mandate, or commandment: Love one another.
Jesus spent his last Thursday showing love....washing the feet of his friends, feeding them, teaching them, and giving them all the preparation he could before his death.
Jesus taught us that love is an action word.

Today is Holy Tuesday…
They circled Him in the temple
voices polished with pride
hearts set on proving Him wrong
And the questions came.
Not soft ones
Not curious ones
But sharp
measured
meant to trap Him
“By what authority…?”
“Should we pay…?”
“What happens in the resurrection…?”
They weren’t asking to understand
they were asking to win
But He answered anyway
Not just with words
but with truth that cut deeper than their questions
Because Jesus doesn’t just respond
He reveals
He told stories that exposed hearts
About tenants who rejected the very one sent to save them
About invitations ignored
About people so close to truth
yet unwilling to step into it
And the crowd listened
Some leaned in
some walked away
some grew more determined to silence Him
Because truth does that
It softens
or it hardens
There is no middle ground when Jesus speaks
And then He said it plainly
Love the Lord your God
with all your heart
with all your soul
with all your mind
And love your neighbor as yourself
Not part of you
not when it’s easy
not when it’s convenient
All
Because religion will ask for appearance
but Jesus asks for everything
And I wonder
Would I have stood there
quietly nodding along
or would I have felt exposed
uncomfortable
convicted by words I couldn’t argue with
Because today
on this Holy Tuesday
it doesn’t feel like a distant story
It feels like He’s still asking
Do you really want truth
or just something that agrees with you
Do you want to know Me
or just understand enough to feel in control
And it’s easy to say we would have chosen Him
But the truth is
we still answer that question every day
In what we hold onto
In what we avoid
In what we let Him touch
Because Jesus is not interested in debates
He is after hearts
Fully
honestly
completely His
And the same voice
that answered every trap with truth
is the same voice
that would soon fall silent
on a cross
for you
So today
lean in
Don’t just ask
to test Him
Ask
to know Him
And when He answers
let it change you
because it will

Today is Holy Monday…
He walked into the temple
and it didn’t look like His Father’s house anymore

Coins clattered louder than prayers
Hands were busy
but hearts were far

They had learned how to gather
without ever truly coming near

So He flipped the tables

Not out of chaos
but out of love

Because anything that keeps you from God
He will confront

Anything pretending to be holy
but hollow inside
He will turn over

And I wonder
if we would have stood there
shocked at His boldness

or quietly realized
He was after something deeper

Not the building
but the hearts inside it

Then there was the tree

Full of leaves
beautiful from a distance

but empty

No fruit
no offering
no life to give

And He spoke to it

and it withered

Not because He is harsh
but because He is honest

Because looking alive
is not the same as being alive

And today
on this Holy Monday

I feel Him walking closer

Not with anger
but with eyes that see everything

Gently turning over the places
I’ve filled with noise

Whispering

this was meant to be a house of prayer

this was meant to be full of life

So let Him

Let Him clear what doesn’t belong

Let Him prune what isn’t bearing fruit

Because the same hands
that overturned the tables

are the same hands
that were stretched out on the cross

for you

And He is not trying to shame you

He is trying to make room
for something real

something living

something that lasts
