This morning, one of our elders exhorted us to consider the ways in which we serve this local body.
This has been a consistent theme from Ephesians as Pastor Todd has been preaching. What is the end goal? How do we get there? Maturity in Christ, holiness, a walk worthy of the Lord, knowledge of Christ, and boldness in spreading the gospel. We need to build each other up as each member of the body does their part.
What does this mean for us individually?
Functionally, how we do church in America means you've got to be a member. Are you submitting yourself to the authority of this local body and its elders, for service, instruction, and discipline if needed? You can't serve in any official capacity if you aren't a member.
It means you need to find ways to use your gifts or find out what your gifts are. Where does your individual part fit?
It means knowing the congregation. Do you feel comfortable enough to nominate someone to be on the deaconate or to be an elder? Do you know them well enough? Have you seen their walk? Do you know where they still need to grow?
It means striving for more, so if you are nominated, you can serve and be willing to serve. Men, are you above reproach and managing your household well? Are you able to teach? Men and women who might be on the deaconate, are you above reproach, are you able to minister to the tangible needs for the congregation or help find others who can? Among other Biblical criteria for the offices of Elder and Deacon... Are you qualified? And if not, are you striving to be qualified in the future?
There is a crucified risen Savior who redeemed us and saved us from the wrath to come and He has placed us in a particular local body to worship Him and grow in His grace. This local body is the primary means for our growth, knowledge, correction, comfort, aid, living to Christ, dying to self, as well as where we are sent from to spread the gospel and bring others to Christ.
What will you do?
