Last week, our St. Nicholas youth had their last Kids Food Basket Farm day of the summer! After a hard 2 hours of harvesting tomatoes, picking weeds and exploring the beautiful grounds, the kids, parents and chaperones headed north to Fr. David and Jenny Khorey's lake house for pizza, swimming, boating, kayaking, fishing and games! Thank you to all our parents and dedicated chaperones who helped transport our kids. Thank you especially to Fr. David and Jenny for your generous hospitality!

A Red Flag day at Lake Michigan couldn't stop our JOY/SOYO Family Beach Day! Instead of going to the big lake, 30 kids and parents headed over to Millennium Park for volleyball, pizza, rock climbing at fun in the water. We even commandeered a sand castle! Thank you to all the volunteers and parents who helped out. We had a great day!

People often ask... What one word best describes our July youth trip to the Kids Food Basket Farm? ONIONS!! Yesterday, our kids harvested & sorted bushels of beautiful, red onions for KFB lunches and local food pantries. They did such a great job, the KFB farmer rewarded them with fresh cucumbers to take home and introduced them to edible flowers. The founder of KFB even came to visit and thank them for all their hard work! Afterwards, the kids were treated to lunch and a great pool party at the Sirotko's house! Thank you to all the parents who helped drive and, especially, to Mike, Angie, Nate and Noah for your hospitality!

On Tuesday, we had our first Kids Food Basket Farm Day of the Summer! Since its still early in the year, there was not much to harvest. So the kids spent time planting petunias, black-eyed Susans and ornamental grasses. These plants have deep roots to help avoid runoff during storms and are excellent at attracting pollinating insects, like bees and butterflies. They were also able to help by weeding and decorating lunch bags, and were rewarded with a snack of fresh cherry tomatoes, straight from the vine! Afterwards we headed to Northeast Park for lunch, games and hiking. Perfect weather and a great time!
