Join us for our new sermon series starting this Sunday! Here is a sneak peek on what the next six weeks of church hold:
When Jesus is asked what is the most important commandment in Scripture, he quotes from Deuteronomy 6:5. One the one hand, it might not have been a shock to those hearing Jesus that day because the command to “Love the Lord your God with all of your heart, soul, and might” is part of a central prayer that Jesus, his disciples, and many other Jews have recited day and night. On the other hand, Jesus says that this command, along with “Love your neighbor as yourself,” sums up “the law and the prophets,” essentially, most of Scripture at that time. Although Jesus is only quoting from one verse in Deuteronomy 6, one could make the argument that he is speaking in a way that refers to all of Deuteronomy 6:4-9. Throughout this series, we will explore how these verses, collectively called the Shema, invite us into a rhythm and practice of discipleship that has its foundation in an ongoing encounter with God.
