Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church of Grand Rapids, MI Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church of Grand Rapids We are Latvian diaspora congregation in Grand Rapids, MI. We are global Latvian Lutheran Church.

Our Synod affiliation is the Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (LELCA). LELCA is part of the Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church in World, with its current Archbishop Lauma Zusevica. We do not have affiliation (even though we have tried on many attempts to create fellowship) with the Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church of Latvia. Main disagreement is about women's ordination. e Latvian Lutheran Church in the World recognize women's ordination. That is not the only issue, howerever, the main one. Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church of Grand Rapids was founded in 1980 as two Latvian Lutheran congregations of Grand Rapids merged. New church building was dedicated in 1986. Pastors serving Latvian Lutheran refugee/ diaspora community since late 1940s have been: pastor Alberts Ozols, pastor Kristaps Hermanis, pastor Janis Lazda, pastor Janis Mednis, pastor Ilze Larsen. Our worship is in Latvian with some English addition. All Church festival worships are in both languages.

Our congregation formed over 70 years ago as a refugee congregation after WW II. We are deeply concerned about the global number of refugees at the present day. We urge for understanding and compassion towards everyone who leaves their homeland as a result of political or economic violence 🙏🏻

The Lutheran World Federation joins the rest of the world in commemorating World Refugee Day on June 20 with a push for inclusion and a celebration of the gifts refugees offer to their local communities.

Rītā pulcējamies uz Aizvesto piemiņas dienas 80. gadadienas dievkalpojumu 10:00 no rīta. Dievkalpojums notiek, kā līdz šim, latviešu katoļu draudzes telpās, biedrībā. Pēc dievkalpojuma notiks Tautas sēru dienai veltīts sarīkojums.

Tomorrow we gather 10 AM for 80th memorial worship since the first (but not the only) deportations and genocide against Latvians in June 14th, 1941. Deportations were commited by the Soviet Communist regime aka the USSR. Over 14, 000 people in one night - children, women, men, elderly were taken out of their homes in the middle of the night, put in railroad cattle transportation and deported to Siberia, to Gulag.
