With deep sadness and gratitude, we announce the passing of Sister Mary Aquinas Weber. Yesterday, she entered into the embrace of our loving God, whom she served with unwavering faith.

Aquinas College will forever cherish her memory.

Sister Aquinas was known for her dedication to students, faculty, staff, alumni and the greater Grand Rapids community. Through her wisdom, faith and generous spirit, she shaped generations of Saints and helped define the heart of our college. Her 102 years were marked by service and compassion, touching countless lives, and her memory will continue to live in ours.

We invite you to navigate to aquinas.edu/sister-aquinas to find her official obituary, share and read stories, and see photos. Funeral arrangements are still being finalized, but we will add them to this page soon.

Update: Sister Aquinas' funeral arrangements have been added to the page. Thank you all for your prayers and kind words.

Aquinas College joins Catholics throughout the world in celebrating and praying for Pope Leo XIV. As with every conclave, we bear witness to a unique and profound historical moment.

Today's announcement and election of Cardinal Robert Prevost as the 267th pope is no exception. As an Augustinian from Chicago, we are certain to see many articles and news accounts about the life and work that led Cardinal Prevost to become Leo XIV.

He is a graduate of Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, where our Board member Sister Barbara Reid, O.P., serves as President.

Sr. Maureen Geary, O.P., Interim President of Aquinas College, had the privilege of meeting with Cardinal Prevost twice when he served as Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops.

Sister Megan McElroy, O.P., Prioress of the Dominican Sisters ~ Grand Rapids and a Trustee of Aquinas College, was present in St. Peter’s Square today when Pope Leo XIV was introduced.

In his first address to the world as Pope, he began, "Peace be with you all." This is the same greeting of the resurrected Christ. The Holy Father also referenced his vision for a church that builds bridges and welcomes all, and lives as a missionary church, going out to those in need. We pray that Pope Leo XIV will continue to bring this Gospel message of peace and hope to our world.
