A chorale (four-part harmony setting) and fugue by J.S. Bach on “These Are the Holy Ten Commands”, Lutheran Service Book 581 - the preservice music for this coming Sunday’s Divine Service. In the fugue, Bach uses the first phrase of Martin Luther’s catechism hymn to develop a musical conversation in an upbeat dance rhythm (called a jig). The key phrase is 10 beats long, ranging over 10 pitches and repeated 10 times, depicting redeemed Christians joyfully walking in the law of the Lord and witnessing to His goodness!

The Lord is the God of compassion, He bore the Israelites on eagles’ wings & called them His treasured people. Jesus healed every disease & affliction through the cities & villages. But His greatest mercy is shown in such love that Christ would die for weak & ungodly people - sinners. Justified by His blood, we are saved from the wrath of God. This message must be shared, for the harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore, the church proclaims the coming of Christ. (Psalm 67:3-7; Exodus 19:2-8; Romans 5:6-15; Matthew 9:35-10:8)
