The Way We Were: The first predominantly African American church in the Western Michigan Diocese. The Way We Are: A diverse God-centered community that celebrates the good news of Jesus Christ b

y our expressions of love and acceptance of all people. The Way We Want to Be: A growing congregation in a house of worship that is historic in its roots and relevant to the present. Philip’s Episcopal Church was organized as a mission on November 12, 1911, and first held services in the Odd Fellows Hall located across the street from our current location. The first services in the present building were held on December 30, 1923, and the building was consecrated in 1936. Philip’s became a parish in 1972. From 1934 to 1938, the Reverend John M. Burgess of Grand Rapids, whose mother helped to found St. Philip’s, was Priest-in-Charge. Bishop Burgess became the first African American bishop in The Episcopal Church when he served as Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts in Boston from 1970 to 1975. Over the years we've been led by both full- and part-time priests, men and women, black and white. Today we are a small but stable, diverse and growing congregation. Our part-time Priest-in-Charge is the Rev. Zachariah Jok Char.
