After 7 years serving the dying, Jesús—himself now terminal after a 5-year battle with cancer— teaches us what sacrifice and obedience to God’s will truly looks like.
Maria Helena and Jesús have taken care of the dying for the last 7 years as live-in volunteers, giving their life to the Gospel of Life Dwellings in a beautiful act of surrender and obedience to God’s calling. Jesús received his cancer diagnosis of liposarcoma 5 years ago; despite the sacrifices that came with this, the couple chose to stay at St. Adelaide’s and continue on with the ministry. Jesús’s oncologist recently told him that he likely has only 2-3 months to live due to the progression of his cancer and serious kidney issues. This means that Maria Helena is fully occupied being present with Jesús and taking care of everything that comes with this news.
As such, St. Adelaide’s home is left with two caregivers for 24/7 care for 3 residents. We need help. Please come and spend a morning, an afternoon, an evening, or a day with us. Currently our residents are mobile (not bed-bound), so we need help with cooking, cleaning, and simply being present to make sure everyone is ok. Making a meal or watching over the residents so one of us can go to mass or run errands would be a huge blessing.
Email me at [email protected] or call/text 203-273-9530 to volunteer.
Please also consider our live-in volunteer position. In this role, you would receive a monthly stipend as well as free room and board, while acting as Christ’s hands and feet to the dying. To learn more about the position email me at [email protected]. We are especially in need of someone to take a live-in position because my husband and I will be moving in June, and I will no longer be able to help out at the house.
Please re-post and share this message to your network of friends and family, especially anyone you know who is considering a mission year or likes to work with the elderly.
