Sunday, May 25th was the last worship for First Presbyterian Church-Grand Prairie. It's 113 year mission was brought to a faithful conclusion. It was a wonderful, joyful and sad day all at the same time.
It was joyful that we were able to close under our own terms by having a celebration. For most churches that close, it's because they've run out of money and the church basically becomes dysfunctional. We really confused Grace Presbytery (who we were a part of.)
Usually when they are called in, it's to come in, take control, pick up the pieces and close down. While we worked faithfully with Presbytery, we were able to close as we saw fit.
This decision to close didn't come lightly and has actually been in discussion for the past 8 years. In our situation, we had buildings that need several hundred thousand dollars in repairs (HVAC, plumbing, roof, etc.). Our congregation was aging with about 60 members, 22 average attendance and the "youngsters" were in their 60s for the most part. We just didn't have the resources or energy to continue.
We felt very blessed to have funds from a previous donation become available for our use. Instead of spending it on ourselves (which is just kicking the can down the road), we were able to bless several local charities as well as some Presbyterian missions with a little less than $300,000. We are thrilled that these donations will leave a lasting legacy in Grand Prairie and beyond.
We were very proud to have two members who are 101--Mildred Walker and Betty Phillips. Both were in attendance along with 3 former pastors and 188 familiar faces. The service was followed by a catered Italian lunch where we were able to fellowship and share many good memories. It was an emotional day.
Please feel free to share your memories in the reply.
Also, we will be starting a private Facebook group for current members so we can keep up and share freely.
