Christmas is coming. The last four weeks we have been seeking light in the darkness, and on Saturday, we celebrate that coming with a candlelight service. Please join us for candlelight Christmas Eve worship on Saturday, December 24 at 2:00 PM or 6:00 PM in the sanctuary.

Have you noticed the wind picking up this morning? Have you heard the forecast for the next few days? We have a wind advisory, wind chill advisory, and a hard freeze warning, and it's supposed to get down to 13 degrees tonight. Fahrenheit, not Celsius! That's 19 degrees below freezing!

This is inconvenient for me as I need to go grocery shopping this morning. I'll have to bundle up while I wait for my heated seat to toast my t***y and for the heater to warm my car. This cold is inconvenient and uncomfortable for me, but it is extremely dangerous for our unhoused neighbors.

Tammy Chan, the director of Grand Prairie Homeless Outreach Organization - GPHOO has worked with pastors throughout Grand Prairie to arrange shelter during this extremely cold weather. Matthew Road Baptist Church has graciously volunteered to host our neighbors beginning this morning through the morning of Monday, December 26th.

It will take a village fueled by God's love to provide this care on such short notice. Please consider how God might be calling you to help over the next few days. In the post below, Tammy details all volunteer needs; to volunteer, please click on her original post and comment there stating which shift you are volunteering for and if anyone else will be joining you.

I believe that there are still a few slots for meals open. If you would like to gather a group to bring a meal, email [email protected], and I will help you coordinate it.

What is the most important thing for a Christian? Is it to be saved and know that you will go to heaven to be with God after you die? Is it to love your neighbor through acts of kindness and social justice? Faith, or works; Christians have been asking this question for literally 2,000 years. There are scriptures supporting both cases.

This week we look at a scripture that appears to cast it's vote in the "works" column.

What do you think?

James 1:22-27, 2:14-18
New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition
22 But be doers of the word and not merely hearers who deceive themselves. 23 For if any are hearers of the word and not doers, they are like those who look at themselves[a] in a mirror; 24 for they look at themselves and, on going away, immediately forget what they were like. 25 But those who look into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and persevere, being not hearers who forget but doers who act—they will be blessed in their doing.

26 If any think they are religious and do not bridle their tongues but deceive their hearts, their religion is worthless. 27 Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself unstained by the world.

14 What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but does not have works? Surely that faith cannot save, can it? 15 If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food 16 and one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill,” and yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? 17 So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead.

18 But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from works, and I by my works will show you faith.
