Jesus commanded His followers to overcome, seven times in His messages to the seven churches in Revelation.

That repetition reveals how important overcoming is to the life of a believer today.

The word “overcometh” comes from the Greek word NIKAO, meaning “to gain victory” or “to get beyond.”

Jesus set the standard for this kind of life when He said: "In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

Jesus never promised His followers a life without trouble. He called us to remain faithful, stand firm, and overcome whatever we face.

The message of Revelation is clear: Jesus urges believers and churches to remain faithful to the end.

But how do we overcome? We overcome by faith in Jesus Christ: "For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.” 1 John 5:4

Our victory does not come from our own strength, ability, or determination. We overcome through faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ and by continuing to trust Him.

We overcome by the blood of the Lamb and by our testimony: "And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.” Revelation 12:11

The blood of Jesus gives us victory over sin, condemnation, and the accusations of the enemy. Our testimony reminds us of what God has done and declares His faithfulness to others.

We overcome evil by refusing to repay evil with evil and by continuing to walk in the love of Christ. "Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.” Romans 12:21

We overcome by remaining faithful and enduring to the end. "But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.” Matthew 24:13

Overcoming is not simply about surviving difficult circumstances. It is about living out a victorious, faithful faith in Christ.

Overcoming means continuing to believe when circumstances are difficult, continuing to obey when obedience is costly, and continuing to stand when others turn away.

Overcoming is the ultimate demonstration of the reality of our faith in Jesus.

It is my renewed commitment as a pastor to help as many believers as possible learn how to study the Bible for themselves.

What are you going to do about evil and the bad things that happen?

Let’s learn to identify the real enemy and fight the right battle. It’s not people we are called to fight, nor are we called to fight against circumstances.

This Sunday at Abundant Life, we’re going to discover how to recognize the real spiritual battle taking place every day; in our families, friends, at work, church, and in every area of our lives.

The evil one is our enemy, not people or circumstances.

People may hurt us, disappoint us, pressure us, or even participate in destructive patterns. Difficult and even evil circumstances can surround us, frustrate us, discourage us, and tempt us to blame, complain, become bitter, or give up.

But when we focus on the wrong enemy, we can become distracted, bound, and defeated.

Our battle is not ultimately against people or circumstances. There is a spiritual battle taking place, and God has called us to stand, overcome, and walk in victory as spiritual warriors.

Come ready to worship. Come ready to receive. Come ready to be equipped.

Don’t fight the wrong enemy. Recognize the real battle and learn how to stand victorious.

In recent years, many Christians and even churches have begun to look primarily to the screen, the platform, and favorite preachers, rather than to the Scriptures themselves.

At Abundant Life, we’re taking steps to prioritize helping people learn how to study the Bible for themselves and interact with others, whether in a Life Group setting, a Bible study, or through witnessing to friends and family.

There is a blessing in listening to gifted teachers and preachers, but there is an even greater blessing when we open the Bible, study it, and learn to recognize truth for ourselves.

Then, when we hear others share, we can better understand, receive, and discern what is being taught. We can be blessed by good teaching without becoming dependent upon the communicator.

We are also better prepared to share what God has been teaching us when we gather with family, in a small group, during a Bible study, or simply in conversation with others.

That’s why I encourage every believer to have a good study Bible and, more importantly, to use it. Don’t just read the Bible, study it. Ask questions. Look at the context. Compare Scripture with Scripture. Explore the meaning of words and passages. Pray and ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand and apply God’s Word.

There are many excellent study Bibles available, but I believe the Spirit Filled Life Bible is one of the best. I have studied from it for years, and it has been a great resource in helping me better understand and apply Scripture.

I especially appreciate the Truth in Action sections, the emphasis on praying the Word, the commentary, and the Hebrew and Greek word studies that provide greater context and practical application. It is available in several translations and editions, I usually study from the NKJV.

Study and search the Scriptures for yourself. Know what you believe and why you believe it. Let God’s Word be your foundation, your guide, and the final authority for what you believe and how you live.

What if your praise is most powerful when you don’t feel like giving it?

Hebrews 13:15 says, “Therefore, through Him let us continually offer up to God a sacrifice of praise, that is, the fruit of our lips that confess His name.”

There’s a powerful word in that verse: sacrifice. The Greek word is thysia, which means an offering or sacrifice, something intentionally brought and given to God.

Sometimes praise comes easily. When God answers our prayers, opens a door, or brings a breakthrough, gratitude can overflow. But what about when you’re hurting? When the answer hasn’t come? When you’re exhausted from waiting, or confused by what is happening?

That’s when your praise becomes a sacrifice and an act of faith.

Praise doesn’t deny what you’re going through. It declares that what you’re going through does not have the final word.

Your circumstances may be difficult, but they are not greater than the God who is with you, in you, and for you.

So praise Him in the waiting. Praise Him in the uncertainty. Praise Him through the tears. Praise Him before you see the breakthrough.

Because your praise says, “God, I may not understand what I’m facing, but I know who You are. You are faithful. You are good. And You are still in control.”

Praise Him, not because the battle is over, but because your God is greater than the battle.

Your hope is alive. Your faith is rising. Your victory is secure in Jesus.
