A history of our illustrious church!!!
Zion Hill Baptist Church #1 Church History
One century, two scores, and seven years ago, the ideal of a church located in Grand Cane, LA became a reality under the divine leadership of two visionaries. The optimism was obviously embedded within their hearts because of their belief in Matthew 16:18 which states, βAnd I say unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my
Church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.β
The Zion Hill Baptist Church #1 became a tangible structure In 1870, under the divine call of Rev. Armstrong, a Caucasian, and Rev. Rally. This church ministry was blessed with seven chartered members-two men and five women. There originators included the following: Bro. John Brown, Ross Henderson, Sis. Rebecca Brown, Harriet Mayweather, Sofie Sanders, Frances Williams, and Lucy Camel. These seven members and two ministers represented the first congregation of the Zion Hill Baptist Church #1, Hence, the church history began in the late 19th century.
The Zion Hill Baptist Church #1 has continued its spiritual ministry under
The leadership of the following shepherds: Pastor Wickwire, Caroliner
Fuller, C. S. Sheldon, Edwards, O. C. Jones, R. B. Sloan, B. J. Garrett,
C. W. Sims, A. Ford, D. W. Williams, Levi Fuller and L. J. Mayweather, Sr. Rev. Paul Wilson, Sr. became our spiritual leader in 2000, and his is currently serving in this capacity today.
The following deacons served this church well as they took care of the business matters of the church: Dea. John Brown Ross Henderson, W. B. Our secretarial notes and top notch records have been kept by the following secretaries: Sis. Gertrude Tillwell, Bro. Price Williams, Tom Hill, C. Hicks,
Sis. Christine Austin, Rosie Ealy-Pea and Patricia A. Harris.
An exemplary job is being continued under the leadership of our current

In 1963, this church moved to its present location. A brick building
was constructed, replacing the former frame structure. The church
eventually added cushioned pews, inside facilities, pulpit furniture,
PA system and central air. In 1995, under the leadership of Rev. L. J.
Mayweather, Sr. a fellowship hall was added to this physical structure.
It contains a kitchen with modern day appliances and seating capacity
for at least eighty people.
Under our current pastor, Rev. Paul Wilson, Sr. this membership has
been able to create a handicapped accessible unisex restroom, added
metal roof, with warranty of longevity, complete face lift of the sanctuary, added high technology which includes a communication room, along with television monitors in the sanctuary and the fellowship hall, provide assistance to the physically disable through means of an assistant ramp. There are many other plans in the making, and the membership is grateful to God, for He is continuously blessing this membership.
Hundreds of members have been converted through the spiritual
messages echoed throughout the sanctuary of the Zion Hill Baptist Church #1. We do believe in the holiness of this temple; for Jesus Christ Himself is the Chief Cornerstone here. Jesus said, β All things are possible to him that believeth.β The members of this church will continue to believe and do all things in His name.
