Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: “May those who love you be secure. Psalm 122:6 (NIV)
This is a Psalm of David. God’s people sang it while going up to Jerusalem for worship at the Temple. When David says, “pray for the peace of Jerusalem,” he is praying for the Safety and stability of the city, Unity among God’s people and, the flourishing of the place where God’s presence was known
The Hebrew word for peace is shalom, which means more than no war. It means wholeness, justice, prosperity, and a right relationship with God.
The original prayer was, “May the place where God is worshiped flourish in righteousness and peace.”
When Jesus came, the center of God’s presence was no longer a city or temple that is why Jesus said, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days” (John 2:19). The New Testament teaches Christ Himself is the true temple and believers are now God’s dwelling place (Ephesians 2:19-22). “He himself is our peace” (Ephesians 2:14). This means true peace for Jerusalem/Israel—or anyone else—comes ONLY through Christ!
Paul loved his countrymen deeply, he wrote in Romans 10:1, “My heart’s desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved.”
There is no doubt whatsoever that Israel has a unique place in God’s redemptive history, however salvation comes through Jesus alone (Romans 10:9–13).
So how should Christians pray today? A biblical prayer for Israel should include these three things, 1. Peace and protection, pray for real peace and justice for all the people living in that land. 2. Salvation through Christ, Like Paul, pray that Jewish people would recognize Jesus as Messiah, and 3. Reconciliation, Pray for peace between Jews, Muslims, and Christians in the region.
“Lord, bring true peace to Israel. Protect those who live there. Remove violence and hatred. Open the hearts of the Jewish people to recognize Jesus as their Messiah and bring reconciliation among all who live in that land”. In the Precious and Holy Name of Jesus, Amen”.
Remember, praying for Israel does not mean endorsing every action of the modern state of Israel. The Bible consistently calls all nations—including Israel—to righteousness and repentance.
The ultimate peace Psalm 122 points toward is fulfilled in Jesus, after all He is the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6).
