“St. Benedict described conversion as a practice of lifelong transformation. We are never done falling more in love with God, with the world, and with one another. As long as we are alive there is always more love to pour out.”

—Christine Valters Paintner, PhD," The Love of Thousands: How Angels, Saints, and Ancestors Walk with Us Toward Holiness"

When the well of love feels dry, how can you commit to the ongoing transformation of falling more in love?

“In a world which runs nonstop where we are always accessible, we have to make the choice to step out from under its tyranny of demands. Sabbath calls us to restore ourselves and remember that the world will go on without our labors. It is ultimately an act of humility which means to remember our earthiness.”

—Christine Valters Paintner, PhD, Monk in the World: An Online, Self-Study Retreat

How do you practice Sabbath?

I’ve never forgotten that.

What we long for often reveals where we hurt.

In places marked by poverty, instability, or suffering, people are often drawn to stories of God’s strength, deliverance, and miraculous provision.

In places marked by affluence, mobility, and individualism, people often ache for connection, belonging, and the assurance that they are not abandoned.

Of course, we need both.

We need a God who is powerful enough to help and present enough to care. The good news of Scripture is that we don’t have to choose between those realities.

The God revealed in Jesus is both.

He is the God who calms storms and the God who sits beside the grieving.

The God who raises the dead and the God who promises, “I am with you always.”

Power without presence feels distant.
Presence without power feels helpless.

In Jesus, we find both. And thank God we do.
