Day 5: Mission Trip Update

Well, today was our final day of work in D.C! We shared the morning with our friends at Bread For The City meeting awesome volunteers, amazing neighbors, and seeing how food and resources make it into the hands of this community. Our students worked hard in the heat and powered through a busy morning shift! We then spent the afternoon at the Holocaust Museum learning about and confronting the horrors of hateful, prejudicial power. This was a difficult, meaningful, and somber experience for everyone. (More reflections on this later)

We wrapped our evening with burritos and games back at our lodging. We are tired and miss our families but we are also so so full of hope and love.

Tomorrow we go to the Capitol, Library of Congress, and Arlington National Cemetery… then we make our way to the airport and head HOME!

We will see you soon, Church! Please pray for safety while we travel and for good rest when we get home.

Much love!

Day 4: Mission Trip Update

Today was another great day in D.C! We started off on an unexpected note with rain this morning which unfortunately meant our morning garden work was cancelled… but we made the best of it and started the out with some reflection time followed by a trek to the Supreme Court after the rain died down. We spent the afternoon at the Food Bank again and got a tour of their 120,000 square foot facility that houses multiple feeding programs… they served 62 million people last year and are on track for 65-70 this year! Today our group loaded about 1700 gallons of milk into boxes… and if you ask me, it was in record time! We then got an extra cool tour of their community garden before saying goodbye.

We wrapped up our afternoon with a stop to walk around the mall while we avoided walking in even more rain outside. Then we spent the evening together playing games, watching baseball, doing puzzles and eating some good dinner at home so we could rest our achy legs!

Keep the prayers coming, church! The week is coming to a close but we still have work to do, and God is still showing up and showing out!

Day 3: Mission Trip Update

Today our morning started with a trip to the national archives where we got the chance to see our nations founding documents. This was an awesome experience and left us all thinking about the ways our country has worked over the years to bring justice and peace through national documents like the emancipation proclamation, different amendments, and coming together through times of crisis and war. This was a difficult tension to hold as we walked, later in the evening, along the Vietnam Memorial Wall of names. This was a sacred and silent moment that brought to mind the complexity of humanity, power, pain, and our hope for a better world. We don’t always get things right. We aren’t always just. We don’t always lean into love. Our greed blinds us and our privilege sets us apart. And still, we pray. We show up. And we try to do better. I hope.

We served our neighbors in D.C this afternoon through the Capitol Area Food Pantry where together we prepped 220 boxes of food for seniors who wouldn’t otherwise have enough to eat. There are 7,000 + members of this program that receive boxes of food monthly for free. We were met by amazing, passionate staff who made working fun and who worked along side us with good tunes and good vibes!

Our feet are sore, legs starting to cramp, and hearts abounding with love and gratitude for a God who walks with us and our neighbors in a world that is messy but held in love that is greater than all of us. Thank God.

Much love, Church. We will check in again with some updates tomorrow! Oh, and we met Einstein…

Day 2: CYF Mission Trip Update

We have wrapped up another day in D.C! We started off our morning with some “continental” breakfast and prepping our sack lunches. Then we made our way via city bus to “Bread For The City” an organization that functions as a food pantry and market for underserved communities in D.C. There, our groups split up to organize clothing, monitor the market, and prep food orders for neighbors as they made their way through the pantry. The morning was full of hard work, big smiles, and lots of love. We then made our way back to rest up before an evening of walking to and around the Lincoln Memorial, Reflection pool, Korean War memorial, and WW2 memorial. Our legs are toast and we are going to bed! Thank you for your prayers church! Keep em’ coming!

There’s so much history of hope, possibility, justice, and vision here in D.C… I wonder what kind of world you hope and pray for? And how are you, with Gods help, making that world a reality?

Goodnight!
