The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America installs the Rev. Yehiel Curry as its first Black presiding bishop on Saturday, marking a historic moment for the predominantly white denomination.

Sunday Oct. 5th we had a free morning for Conference of Bishops to worship at a congregation of our choice. Was fun for me to ride along with the St Paul Area Synod bishop Patricia Lull and new Lower Susquehanna Synod bishop Steve Herr to St. Anthony Park Lutheran across the street from Luther Seminary.

St Anthony Park's current co-pastors are the Rev. Jill Rode and the Rev. Daniel Ruen. Daniel was a seminary classmate and Jill was an intern at St. John United-Seattle where I also did my internship. A fun connection for sure. They did blessing of the animals in honor of St. Francis of Assisi.

The afternoon was full of meetings. Culminating with greetings from our The Lutheran World Federation visiting bishops who were present for the installation service. We recieved greetings from bishops from Nigeria, Namibia, Angola, and Norway. Including the first female bishop in Namibia (a majority Lutheran country).

Was pleased to see updates from our NT-NL Synod, ELCA Mission Endowment Fund celebration dinner on Saturday night. Grateful for the hospitality of Iglesia Santa Maria and Pastor Moises Carrasquillo. As I knew I couldnt be present I recorded a video message for the evening. Grateful for our MEF director Jennifer Hackmeister and her team.

In 2027 the ELCA Youth Gathering will take place in Minneapolis from June 28-July 2.

I am in Minneapolis for the installation of Bishop Curry and Conference of Bishops meetings. So during the lunch hour today I went out for a jog to see some of the sights of Minneapolis. This included the US Bank Stadium where the mass gatherings will happen.

I also went up to St. Anthony Falls and had a lovely view of the stone arch bridge and downtown. Then by the historic courthouse.

A nice cool 55 degree day led to an enjoyable experience. Looking forward to 2027. If you have youth who want to attend start planning now. And there will again be a bishop's group for congregations with 3 or fewer youth and no adult sponsor. We also look forward to the Briarwood Legacy Endowment providing strong financial support in partnership with congregations.
