Proverbial Summer, Week 2

A DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT: On this date, June 11, Christian communities remember Barnabas, "son of encouragement" (Acts 4:36). He was an important leader of the early Christian community and introduced St Paul to the Christian church in Antioch. The word "encouragement" is the same word used of the Holy Spirit (John 14:26), the One who stands as our side, the Comforter, the Counselor, the Advocate. Barnabas was such a Christian for many. I wrote the following hymn stanza several years ago:
All praise to gentle Barnabas,
Among the Seventy,
Who led St Paul to others
To boldly speak of Thee.
Strengthen our faith for service
That we may also be
People of faith and hope and love,
With Your true charity.
