A DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT: Many Christian communities remember Gregory the Great on this date, the day he was consecrated Pope in AD 590. Gregory was born into a wealthy Roman family, but gave up his wealth for the sake of the poor. He helped with restoring Rome's infrastructure as he also served the church through expanded missionary work in northern Europe, the development of worship and music, and benevolent practices. He was a prolific writer in theology and pastoral care. We remember him as a shepherd of Christ's people and thank God for all our pastors and church leaders.

A DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT: Today, August 20, many Christian groups recall the Old Testament figure, Samuel. He was a key figure in a transitional time in Israel's history as they moved from a period of judges to the time of the kings. We know the story of Samuel's birth and service in the Lord's house with Eli, when the Lord appeared to him and he responded, "Speak, Lord, Your servant hears." (See the whole book of 1 Samuel.) Samuel was a prophet, priest, and king-maker. In a way, Samuel was a forerunner of Jesus who is our ultimate Prophet, Priest, and King. We thank the Lord for His revelation to Samuel and to each of us as One who cares and enables us to serve.
