CREATIVITY, ORDER, AND UNITY COMMISSIONED
GENESIS 1:1-2:4a, MATTHEW 28:16-20, 2 CORINTHIANS 13:11-13

PASTOR HOWIE MAXSON

Genesis 1:1-2:4a “The Beginning

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light ‘day,’ and the darkness he called ‘night.’ And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.

And God said, ‘Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.’ So, God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so. God called the vault ‘sky.’ And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day.

And God said, ‘Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.’ And it was so. God called the dry ground ‘land,’ and the gathered waters he called ‘seas.’ And God saw that it was good.

Then God said, ‘Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.’ And it was so. The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day.

And God said, ‘Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years, and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.’ And it was so. God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth, to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day.

And God said, ‘Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the vault of the sky.’ So, God created the great creatures of the sea and every living thing with which the water teems and that moves about in it, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. God blessed them and said, ‘Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas and let the birds increase on the earth.’ And there was evening, and there was morning—the fifth day.

And God said, ‘Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: the livestock, the creatures that move along the ground, and the wild animals, each according to its kind.’ And it was so. God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.

Then God said, ‘Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.’

So, God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.’

Then God said, ‘I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.’ And it was so.

God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.

Thus, the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.

By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so, on the seventh day he rested from all his work. Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.

This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created…”

Genesis shows the universe to be God’s Creation, with Order and Unity; and He commissioned it all! An interesting definition of the word “universe” is found here; “The term universe first appeared in English in the 1580s, borrowed from Old French univers, which itself came from Latin universum, meaning ‘all things, everybody, the whole world’. The Latin universum is the neuter noun form of the adjective universus, which literally means "all together, whole, entire". This word is formed from unus (‘one’) and the past participle of vertere (‘to turn, convert, transform’), conveying the idea of ‘turned into one’ or ‘combined into a single whole.’" (Online Etymology Dictionary)

God is still in the process of turning, converting and transforming us as He leads us into the New Heavens and New Earth.

“Matthew 28:16-20, “The Great Commission

Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.’”

Genesis tells us that “God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day. Thus, the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array. By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so, on the seventh day he rested from all his work.
Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.”

A new day dawned, featuring the beginning of the history of Mankind. Our history began in innocence and paradise. Paradise didn’t last long. The adversary, using a serpent whispered lies, which mankind listened to, and turned to. Eve listened, considered, and turned to the forbidden fruit and ate. She turned to her husband and he ate the fruit, forbidden by God. Paradise lost. God’s work of redemption began, the work of “turning, converting and transforming us” back to wholeness in a renewed universe of wholeness and eternal communion with God.

God so loved the universe (he pronounced it good seven times in Genesis 1) that He sent His one and only Son (Jesus) that whoever (in the universe) believes in Him may not perish but have eternal life. The universe, which includes all of mankind, was whole and good and a perfect paradise for humans to live in …forever. The first humans, living in innocence, listened to a liar, and smashed paradise on floor.

God sent His sinless Son into the midst of mans mess, with the glue of Gods grace, carrying the label of faith to apply to the broken pieces, to put the universe back together again. And Jesus has commissioned disciples like us to tell everybody everywhere about this good news! Think about these things as we read II Corinthians 13:11-13, “Final Greetings

“Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice! Strive for full restoration, encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you. Greet one another with a holy kiss. (embrace one another) All God’s people here send the greetings of the Gospel everywhere. May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.” (II Corinthians 13:11-13, NIV)

Be creative, be turned, converted and transformed, that the broken people we meet in this broken world may be whole in Christ, due to our witness.

Hymn 147 How Great Thou Art

Benediction: Among the gods there is none like the Lord; no deeds can compare with His. All the nations He has made will come and worship before the Lord; they will bring glory to His name. For He is great and does marvelous deeds; He alone is God.
Teach us your way, LORD, that we may rely on your faithfulness; give us undivided hearts, that we may fear your name. (From Psalm 86:8-11)

If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him? (Matthew 7:11)

Rejoice, O believer! Rejoice in the unaccountably vast treasure of mercy the Lord showers upon His bride! He is the King of All and is faithful to reward His children. He has given you a throne! A robe of righteousness! A crown of victorious glory! Every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places is yours by the Father's hand. According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that [pertain] unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. (2 Peter 1:3-4)

His beautiful excellence draws us near and grants us many promises that we may be fashioned into His superior character and likeness. As believers of Christ, we have been washed of our transgressions and set apart from the ever-present evil world. Through our knowledge of the everlasting Father, we are granted these most precious promises!

PUT TO DEATH IN THE FLESH, MADE ALIVE IN THE SPIRIT
JOHN 14:15-21, ACTS 17:22-31 AND I PETER 3:13-22
MAY 10, 2026
PASTOR HOWIE MAXSON

John 14:15-21, NIV, “Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

“‘If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.’”

Acts 17:22-31, NIV “In Athens

Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said: ‘People of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious. For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: to an unknown god. So, you are ignorant of the very thing you worship—and this is what I am going to proclaim to you.

‘The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands. And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else. From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us. “‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’” [From the Cretan philosopher Epimenides] As some of your own poets have said, “‘We are his offspring.’” [From the Cilician Stoic philosopher Aratus]

‘Therefore, since we are God’s offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone—an image made by human design and skill. In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.’”

I Peter 3:13-22, “Suffering for Doing Good

…Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. ‘Do not fear their threats; do not be frightened.” [Isaiah 8:12] But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. For it is better, if it is God’s will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil. For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit. After being made alive, he went and made proclamation to the imprisoned spirits— to those who were disobedient long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water, and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at God’s right hand—with angels, authorities and powers in
submission to him.”

We are pointed to the importance of love and real relationships with God, one another and the people of the world around us. We must love, within the context of faith. We must also acknowledge the tragedy of empty religion, deism, pagan idolatry, and atheism.

In these Scripture passages we are being called to repentance and invited to a deeper personal relationship with God, by grace through faith in the death, burial, resurrection, and second coming of Jesus.

We are invited to invite the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts and lives. We are challenged to let Him do His work as Jesus continued to teach, (John 15:26-16:15); “When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me. And you also must testify…
“Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because people do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.

“I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”

Paul wrote, “…[we] were called to be free. But we are not to use our freedom to indulge the flesh; [but we are to] …walk by the Spirit and not gratify the desires of the flesh.”

He also said, “…the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” And teaches that “Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.” He instructs us, “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.” (Gal. 5:13-25) Thus, we hear what Jesus prayed, “I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.” (The Lord’s prayer, John 17:23)

These three passages display the reality of God’s presence, the call to love and obey Jesus Christ, and the assurance of God’s judgment and mercy.

Jesus promises that truly loving Him will result in keeping His commandments. He promises that He will send the Holy Spirit (another advocate) to dwell with and in believers. The Spirit is described as the “Spirit of truth” who reveals God’s presence and truth. God is not a distant, impersonal God, but the one true God, Emmanuel, who is with us, in us, and who will manifest Himself to those who love and obey the commands of Jesus. (from Bible Gateway)

Paul addressed the Athenians, who worshiped an “unknown god” in the midst of so many idols. He points to the created order with references from Genesis and even connects his message from Scripture with common sayings from human philosophy. Paul quotes the Cretan philosopher Epimenides who wrote “In him we live and move and have our being.”

This statement parallels Paul’s writing in Romans 1:19-20, “…what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.”

God is Lord of heaven and earth, not confined to human-made shrines, and has appointed a day of judgment through Jesus, raised from the dead and alive forevermore. This shows that God’s truth is accessible to all, regardless of cultural or religious background. (www.scriptureincontext.org)

Peter’s words urge believers to live in obedience to God’s commandments, knowing that God’s judgment is coming. He warns us against resisting the truth and calls for endurance, patience, and trust in God’s mercy. It echoes John’s teaching that obedience and love are inseparable, and Paul’s call to recognize the true God in creation. We are to live in light of His coming judgment, trusting in His mercy. Despite resistance from the world, we are to present a coherent witness to the living God who is both near and sovereign and coming again. (from Bible Gateway)
