Institute for the Study of Global Anabaptism

Institute for the Study of Global Anabaptism The ISGA promotes global connection and storytelling that enriches Anabaptist scholarship.

Anchored firmly in the resources of the Mennonite Historical Library and the long tradition of academic scholarship at Goshen College, the ISGA’s initiatives foster academic research that is specifically oriented to global church life and practice. In particular, the ISGA seeks to help North American Mennonites better understand the nature of the global church and nurture a closer sense of fellowship among Anabaptist-Mennonites around the world.

If you are local to the Goshen-Elkhart area, join us this Saturday morning, Sept 6, for "In the Company of Hutterites and Aliens: The Making of Two Books" with Dr. Duane Stoltzfus.

Time: 9:30 am-10:30 am, with refreshments served at 9:00 am
Place: Koinonia Room, College Mennonite Church, Goshen College

Dr. Duane Stoltzfus, professor of communication at Goshen College, will reflect on the process of researching two books focused on the historical realities of being pacifist in the United States, from the perspective of Hutterites during World War I and foreign nationals who were denied citizenship in the 1920-1940s, because of their refusal to bear arms.

Following the program, participants are invited to visit the current museum exhibit, “Hutterite Life (from 1528): Communal Anabaptists,” in the gallery of Good Library.

We're grateful to professors and pastors Danang Kristiawan and Teguh Karyanto for visiting the Goshen-Elkhart area, following their participation in the "Early Anabaptism in Global Perspective" conference at Elizabethtown College last week. Danang (pictured below) and Teguh joined us at Goshen College last Saturday for a time of conversation about Mennonite-Muslim relationships in Java, Indonesia. Their presentations explored theological insights and practical ministry applications from their contexts, as well as highlighting intersections with theological education and environmental work. It was an energizing discussion!

Blessings to both Danang and Teguh as they return home. Thank you to Mennonite Mission Network, Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary, and Anabaptist Climate Collaborative for sponsoring and coordinating their visit.

If you are local to the Goshen-Elkhart, Indiana area, mark the morning of July 26 on your calendar! Join us in the Koinonia Room of College Mennonite Church for a morning of learning and fellowship with Teguh Karyanto and Danang Kristiawan, Indonesian Mennonite scholars and pastors.

Indonesia, the largest Muslim-majority nation in the world, is also home to a thriving Christian population, including the Gereja Injili di Tanah Jawa (GITJ), the oldest Mennonite church outside of Europe and North America. Teguh and Danang will share how the Mennonite community emerged in Java and how Javanese Mennonites live out their faith among their Muslim neighbors today. Light refreshments provided.

"The Way of the Gospel in Java" is also the title of a book on the history of the GITJ, written by Lawrence Yoder and Sigit Heru Sukoco and published in 2020. Copies will be available for purchase at this event.
