Born in 1783, Jarena Lee was the first woman authorized to preach in the African Methodist Episcopal Church.

Richard Allen initially refused to let a woman preach at Bethel AME Church but changed his mind when he heard Lee’s charismatic response to a visiting preacher’s sermon. Lee also traveled extensively outside of Philadelphia to preach. In one year, she claimed to have traveled 2,325 miles to deliver 178 sermons. In 1836, she published her autobiography, making her one of the first published African American autobiographers in the nation.
