First Parish Congregational Church Gorham (207) 839-6751
Worship hours: 10:00 a.m. (Children's programming during worship) Welcome to First Parish Congregational Church, U.C.C.

We would welcome a church as diverse as all of humanity. And so whoever you are, wherever you are on life’s journey, we can offer you a place in our community of seekers, believers, and doubters. We are engaged together in a quest to explore the meaning of our lives and the meaning of God’s love amid the demands of our complex world. We don’t all believe the same things. We don’t all live the same

kinds of lives. We don’t all come from the same traditions. But we do all share a commitment to support and care for each other; to seek God’s love at the center of our days; and to embody that love in the way we work together. We are an Open and Affirming congregation of the United Church of Christ, inviting into our common life all persons regardless of race, culture, or sexual orientation. Come and be a part of this extraordinary family.

We have many families whose legitimate asylum claims are being denied because of illegal and unethical action by the current administration. We have a story about that.

Luke 18:1-8. (adjusted by Christine)
Then Jesus told them a parable about their need to pray always and not to lose heart. He said, “In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor had respect for people. In that city there was a widow who kept coming to him and saying, ‘Grant me justice against my accuser.’ For a while he refused, but later he said to himself, ‘Though I have no fear of God and no respect for anyone, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will grant her justice, so that she may not wear me out by continually coming.’ ” And Jesus said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says. And will not God grant justice through us when we cry out and march and protest and write to those in power day and night? Is the delay because we are slow to pray with our feet and voices and pens? I tell you, justice to them when we act. And yet, right now, does it look like we are being faithful?”

Why so many forms?
Why not just that one
hydrogen atom?

The creator goes off
on one wild, specific
tangent after another,
or millions simultaneously,
with an exuberance
that would seem to be
unwarranted, and with
an abandoned energy sprung
from an unfathomable font.

What is going on here?
The point of the dragonfly’s
terrible lip, the giant water bug,
birdsong, or the beautiful dazzle
and flash of sunlighted minnows,
is not that it all fits together
like clockwork – for it doesn’t,
particularly, not even inside
the goldfish bowl – but that
it all flows so freely and wild,
like the creek, that it all surges
in such a free, fringed tangle.

Freedom is the world’s water
and weather, the world’s nourishment
freely given, its soil and sap:
and the creator loves pizzazz.

Thank you Earth for your care. May we learn from you.

The earth was entrusted to us in order that it be mother for us, capable of giving to each one what is necessary to live.… The earth is generous and holds nothing back from those who safeguard it. The earth, which is mother of all, asks for respect, not violence.
—Pope Francis, Our Mother Earth
