In June 1920, Bishop Johnson came through these parts and met Charles Elliot Lewis (C. E. Lewis). Together with Elder Lewis, the two collaborated to build the first Cobham House of God. (This first temple is depicted as this page's cover photo, and prior to its construction in the 1930s, the saints met in people's homes. The current building was constructed in 1957 with major additions in the 1990s.)

Bishop Rufus Abraham Reid Johnson aka Bishop R. A. R. Johnson. Bishop Johnson's birth year is in question. Dr. Larry Sherrill, in his book, _Church History: The House of God, Holy Church of the Living God, the Pillar and the Ground of the Truth, the House of Prayer for all People, Inc._, lists May 5, 1863. Other publications have 1876 as his birth year. He was born in Georgia, and his name is a combination of the surnames of slave owners. His father was a Mr. William Johnson. (Johnson was the slave owner.) Reid was added when the owner Johnson's daughter, Eliza, married Benjamin Reid, and Bishop's parents were given to Eliza and Benjamin. (This information is based on an oral account from documents that were in the possession of Assistant Pastor Ruth Ragland. The names and dates have not been verified as of yet.)

Since Apostle James asked me a couple of years ago to act as a historian, I have grappled with the concept. I did not have a good idea of what a historian is supposed to do. Ultimately, I decided to approach this problem by asking myself the question, "What am I interested in knowing about the church's past history?" When I asked myself that question, it became clearer to me. Not only do I want to know about the church's pastors, I also want to know about its people.

So, periodically, I will be updating this page with information that I find about the church's pastors, its saints of old, and the saints that have been laid to rest in the church's cemetery. If you're interested in learning more, like or follow this page for more updates.
