The Smyrna Community had a huge storm that went through last night. Many flowers have been blown off graves. Please try to make plans to come by and check your loved one’s graves. We will clean them up soon.

Roy Dean Nelson, age 82, of Goodwater, Alabama, passed away peacefully at home on August 4, 2026. Born on May 15, 1944, Roy lived a life rooted in faith, family, and a love for the outdoors.

Roy was a man of strong faith who loved his church family dearly. He was a giving soul, always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He was happily married to his beloved wife, Sara Frances Nelson, for 42 years before her passing in 2019.

Above all, Roy was devoted to his family and was happiest when surrounded by his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and even great-great-grandchildren. His grandkids fondly cherish the memories of walking through the woods and trails on his land with him, where he always made sure to have extra walking sticks on hand for each of them because they wanted to be just like him.

Whether hunting, fishing, or gathering with family, he truly loved spending time outdoors and with those he loved.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lee Allen Nelson and Hazel Dean Nelson; his wife, Sara Frances Nelson; his sons, Ricky Hodge and Leonard Hodge; his grandson, Austin Hodge; his brothers, Ray Nelson and Mike Nelson; and his sister, Betty Culver.

Roy is survived by his sons, John Hodge (Vasana) of Goodwater, AL, and Jimmy Nelson (Tina) of New Site, AL; his daughters, Barbara Norrell (Richard) of Opelika, AL, and Sheri Lorenzen (Larry) of Tampa, FL; and his brothers, Jack Nelson and Donald Nelson.

He also leaves behind a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, each of whom he loved deeply.

Memorial Service

We are grateful for the love and care families show when visiting the gravesites of their loved ones. Flowers, small keepsakes, and other small appropriate trinkets can be a meaningful way to honor and remember those who have passed.

Please also keep in mind that any personal items or decorations left at a gravesite are left at the owner’s risk. The cemetery and those responsible for its care will not be held responsible for items that are lost, stolen, damaged, moved, or affected by weather.

The Coosa County Sheriff’s Office regularly patrols the cemetery grounds, and the local neighborhood watch also keeps a close eye on the area, reporting any suspicious activity. However, they may not know who should/should not be moving items at any specific grave.
