From the Secretary's Desk
Mrs. Plum
I have a small garden bed on the south end of my deck that has been neglected more often than not, I am ashamed to say. With the help of my husband, a rototiller and a tractor bucket of nice dirt, we transformed that garden into something more inviting for planting. I decided to plant a small vegetable garden with corn, peas, zucchini, squash, carrots, green beans and lettuce. I made my rows and hills and planted those seeds. I made wooden markers to let me know where things would be growing. Gathered a few small fence posts and fencing to keep my garden safe from my chickens and any other of God's creatures that may find it interesting. Before putting up the fence, I stepped into the house for just a few minutes only to come out and find one of my hens, Mrs Plum, in those few minutes, had found my newly planted garden and managed to eat a half of one of the short rows of corn and flatten the hills of squash and zucchini only to gobble those seeds as well.
Now not saying that she is even close to being a devil but what she did turned my thoughts to him. Being human beings, we have all had him show up when we least expected it. Our lives seem to be planted well when perhaps his voice of doubt begins to fill our minds. Maybe a whole series of unfortunate events begin to fill your days. A sickness or death touches your family or friends. There are more ways than I care to think of in which the devil comes to rob, steal and destroy... Just like my hen did in my garden and he did in the garden where God walked with Adam and Eve in the coolness of the evening. But Satan didn't stop there, he continues to this very day. Our Lord though, out of His great love for us, had a plan... He couldn't bear to watch his creation suffer under the curse and torment of this fallen angel. His Son would serve as reconciler for each and every one of us from the beginning of time. Someone who stands before His Father in Heaven and says "Forgive them, for they know not what they do," and has secured a place in heaven for all eternity for those who believe.
So like the fence that has since been put up to protect my garden, so does our Jesus protect us from the hell and damnation that we all deserve.
Psalm 91:4: "He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart."
