We are continuing our study on 1 Peter this week. Here is a rundown on what we will see. WEEK 3 — 1 Peter 2:1–10

Week 3 of A Living Hope calls the Church to grow up into maturity by leaving behind the relational sins that poison community and by craving the nourishment of God’s Word. Peter begins with practical clarity: malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander cannot coexist with a healthy church family. Instead, believers are to hunger for the “pure milk” of Scripture so that spiritual growth becomes normal—not occasional. This passage reminds us that real discipleship includes both putting away what breaks the body and taking in what strengthens it.

Peter then centers everything on Jesus as the Living Stone and the Cornerstone. Though the world rejected Him, God honored Him—and everyone who comes to Christ becomes a “living stone” being built into a spiritual house. The Church is not simply a place we attend; it is a people God is building. Peter names our identity in powerful terms: chosen race, royal priesthood, holy nation, a people for His possession—so that we may proclaim the praises of the One who called us out of darkness into marvelous light. Week 3 invites The Church of Good Hope to live from that identity with unity, maturity, and mission.

If you set it as your home church then we can follow along with the sermons and events happening at Church of Good Hope.

The Church of Good Hope exists to join God in His work of transforming lives through the power of the Gospel. Rooted in faith and centered on Christ, we are committed to connecting the people of Good Hope and the surrounding communities to a God-first life. We believe real hope is found in Jesus, an...

Good news… the 4:00pm service is on and you’re invited!

The roads I took (Snow’s Mill and Hwy 83) were acceptable at 12:00pm and many roads should be decent by this afternoon. Obviously, avoid hilly roads with lots of tree cover if you can. And, if your driveway or neighborhood is snowed in, then we’ll hope to meet you at one of our upcoming services instead (11am on Sundays). We’ll wrap up the service by 5pm so you can head home before things start freezing again.

If you can make it, we’d love to have you as we welcome Glenn Hughes as our church’s first ministry staff member. We can’t wait to see what God does as Glenn invests some very intentional time in our community. We can’t wait to meet you, hear your stories, and share the greatest story with you… the God that made you loves you more than you could ever know.

Well, the snow has moved on, but the wind, frigid temps, and icy roads and walkways remain. As a result, Church of Good Hope is going to try to push our regular 11am service back to 4pm on Sunday, Feb 1st.

We missed our time together last week and pray we won’t have to skip another week. The hope is if we delay things five hours, the roads will thaw enough on Sunday afternoon to allow for safe travel (we’ll update our decision after we assess the roads around noon tomorrow).

If things warm up enough, we’ll be welcoming Glenn Hughes on staff and we can’t wait for him to meet you.

Stay safe, stay warm, and have a great night!

Happy Friday, Good Hope!

There’s still no consensus on how bad this weekend’s storm is going to be. However, it seems clear that Sunday morning is not going to be great for driving.

As a result, Church of Good Hope is CANCELING our service on JAN 25th due to the weather.

We won’t post a sermon for this Sunday, but you’re welcome to finish our series on Joshua on your own. You may be asking, “How can I finish a sermon series on my own - I’m not a pastor or a Sunday School teacher (or, maybe not even a Christian)?”

It’s easier than you might think:
1. Grab a Bible, or the YouVersion Bible App, or just search online
2. Look for and read Joshua 24:14-15 (preferably read it more than once and in more than one version)
3. Ask questions about any of the wording you don’t understand (i.e., Does the phrase “fear the LORD” mean to be afraid, or does it mean something else? Why is “LORD” written in all capital letters?)
4. Ask questions about the content of the verses (i.e., What are some unreliable “gods” that people trusted in years ago or that people trust in now? Health? Power? Success? Self-righteousness? ________? How is that different from experiencing a real relationship with the one true LORD?)
5. Ask questions about what to do with the content of these two verses (i.e. In my own life, do I put my trust in any of these other unreliable “gods”? If God loves me enough to rescue me through Jesus, how would I be transformed by choosing to follow and serve Him?)
6. Think through what you discovered about God over the past couple of minutes. And maybe share your thoughts or questions with someone else (if you aren’t connected to a local church, consider stopping by Church of Good Hope at 11am next week and sharing what you learned with us).

Along those lines, we’re excited to tell you that God has worked it out for us to bring Glenn Hughes to Church of Good Hope as our first ministry staff member. Glenn will start on Feb 1st and will be working part-time. He will split his week evenly between preparing for Sunday services, doing the business tasks it takes to keeps church running smoothly, and spending time building relationships and doing ministry in the community. Every person in Good Hope (and the surrounding areas) is very valuable to God. You’re so valuable that you deserve to have people investing time in you as they describe and demonstrate the love of Jesus in practical ways. We look forward to what God will do in this town as Glenn partners with us.

We’ll be praying for our entire Good Hope Community as you try to stay warm and dry over these next three days. We’ll be praying that the power stays on and that if it does go out, your electricity will be restored quickly. We’ll be praying for the utility workers and the first responders that will be working hard and risking the weather to keep us safe. And, we’ll be praying that you’ll still experience the Peace of Christ in the chaos of the storm.

Good morning, Good Hope. We hope you had a wonderful week with friends and family.

As a quick reminder, Church of Good Hope does not gather for a service on the Sunday after Christmas.

We look forward to meeting you in 2026. We can’t wait to hear the stories of what God is doing in your life, or share the stories of how the Good News of Jesus has transformed our lives.

On this Memorial Day weekend, our nation takes a moment to pause and honor the men and women of our country who have lost their lives while serving in the US Armed Forces. Their sacrifice (and the sacrifices of their families and loved ones) have helped sustain the freedoms we enjoy. Thank you to the countless soldiers who have paid this ultimate price.

Church of Good Hope does not meet on Memorial Day weekend, but we hope you’ll consider spending an hour with us one Sunday this summer.

It’s a couple hours after sunrise on Sunday morning (about 2,000 years ago) and the disciples’ minds, hearts, and emotions are in overdrive.

When the women arrived at the tomb, they discovered the stone had been rolled away and the tomb was empty. An angel said to them: “I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; He has risen, just as He said… So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell His disciples.”

Were they afraid because they had just seen an angel? Were they afraid because of what the government officials and religious leaders might do? Or were they simply afraid to fully believe that Jesus was alive again?

Regardless, their joy was real because the source of their joy, Jesus, was alive! He conquered death about 2,000 years ago and offers life to all who believe in Him today. He loves you!

Happy Easter! He has risen!

It’s early Sunday morning (about 2,000 years ago) and the followers of Christ are still brokenhearted. The One they thought would rescue them is still dead. Their loss is still monumental. Their grief is still overwhelming. They haven’t slept well over the past three nights because of the events they’ve witnessed.

Several of the women begin to gather supplies to take to the garden tomb at dawn. These are not supplies to welcome Jesus back from the dead, but spices and perfumes to give His body the full burial treatment it deserves (His burial on Friday night was so rushed). It’s almost the “third day” but it still has the feeling of the “second day” and nobody likes the overwhelming hopelessness of the moment.

Somewhere nearby the roosters begin to stir. When he hears them, Peter tells the women they’ll have to go to the tomb without him. So far, this Sunday morning (about 2,000 years ago) is one of the worst days the disciples have ever experienced. Fortunately, it’s still early.

It’s Saturday evening (about 2,000 years ago) and the shock that Jesus‘ disciples were dealing with has worn off. The events of the last two days have finally sunk in and so has the despair. Their Rabbi, their friend, the Miracle Worker, and the one they thought was the Messiah, was now just another victim of a cruel cross and another resident of a cold tomb. It is a cultural day of rest, but even if it wasn’t, there’s nothing for the Christ followers to do. So they sit, they mourn, they cry, and they gather together to try to comfort one another, but it’s no use.

It wasn’t long ago that Jesus told them what would happen: “The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men. They will kill him, and on the third day He will be raised to life.” But the disciples didn’t really hear the last part of His statement when He made it, and none of them remember any of this tonight (about 2,000 years ago). They are simply grieving… stuck as followers of a dead man… stuck mourning the loss of someone they have forgotten promised to return… stuck on the “second day” and not looking with any expectation toward the “third day.”

It’s Saturday morning (about 2,000 years ago) and Jesus’ followers are still in shock over the events from the past week.

Earlier in the week the crowds welcomed Jesus into the city with singing and shouting: “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!” And by the end of the week the crowds were shouting: “Crucify Him!”

What changed? How did we get to the point that the Messiah’s body is buried in a tomb and all of His followers are hiding away from the religious leaders?

The answer is that nothing changed. This was the plan all along. There were prophecies that needed to be fulfilled and there was the demand for a sacrifice that needed to be met. Jesus was the only One capable of the task.

Did He want to endure the cross? No. In fact, His prayer late Thursday night (about 2,000 years ago) was for another way to redeem Creation. Did Jesus volunteer to endure the cross? Yes. In fact, He finished that same prayer by saying He would follow the will of God the Father, like He had always done.

And now, from the perspective of everyone that knew Jesus, the mission to rescue the world had failed. Jesus was dead. And what good is there in following a dead Savior? There is no good in that. There is no purpose in following a dead Savior.

These are the types of thoughts that are running through the disciples minds on Saturday morning (about 2,000 years ago). These are the types of thoughts that are running through everyone’s mind. This is the harsh reality of living on the day before Easter Sunday, when you don’t yet know about Easter Sunday.

Happy Saturday before Easter!

It’s Friday afternoon (about 2,000 years ago) and a couple of Jesus’ followers are trying to get permission to take His body from the cross and give it a rushed burial. We’re currently in the most unique time of history… God the Father stepped away (“My God, my God, why have You forsaken Me?”), God the Son has died a physical death, and God the Spirit has not yet been sent to walk through daily life with Jesus’ disciples. The absence of an obvious presence of God in the world has never happened before and will never happen again, but here we are (almost 2,000 years ago) in the middle of that situation. The disciples have already forgotten that Jesus said this had to happen this way. The religious leaders are just glad to be rid of Him. And, the world plunges into an eerie level of silence as Creation reacts to the death of the One that gives life. It’s a good thing this is not the end of the story, but for now, it sure feels like it is.
