Last month we came together over dinner to watch Takeover, a documentary following unhoused people who organized simultaneous takeovers of vacant, federally-owned housing in at least 8 cities across the country.

After the movie, we wondered: Why is it illegal for homeless children, pregnant women, veterans, or anyone for that matter to take shelter in buildings otherwise not serving anyone? Especially when there are *28 empty homes* for every homeless person. Why have 25 million of us been cut off from life-saving Medicaid, 300,000 in North Carolina alone?

We did this alongside dozens of other actions taken by organizations as a part of the Nonviolent Medicaid Army week of action. Some held community potlucks, others claimed the steps of their state's capitol in protest - one org conducted a people's tribunal and laid blame for the lives lost from policy decisions that produce 800 daily US lives lost to poverty.

It doesn't have to be this way! We're going to take back and ensure our human rights to housing, healthcare, and dignity. Don't mind anyone who says we can't y'all - we're homeless, not helpless.
