Unitarian Universalist Animal Ministry UUAM empowers individuals, chapters, and congregations to build justice and compassion for animals

Who We Are

UUAM supports Unitarian Universalists and friends in fostering and building respect, compassion, and justice for all beings. We draw on our UU values, covenants, traditions, ancestors in faith, and congregational life to deepen our awareness of the interdependence of life. We then support one another in not just learning how caring for all beings is a moral and religious issue, but als

o engaging in concrete actions that bring about change on the individual, family, congregational, community, and societal level. We do this not just for the sake of our nonhuman kin but for ourselves and all the more-than-human world. For as we live a life committed to protecting all beings from exploitation, creating and nurturing relationships of care, respect, mutuality and justice, and work to repair harm and damaged relationships, we live fully, deeply, and authentically. As we come to love our neighbors as ourselves, we liberate not just others, but ourselves as well. May all beings be free of exploitation; may all know rest and peace, joy and satisfaction; may we each play our part in making it so.

Today is World Environment Day.

For animals, the environment is not an idea. It is home.

It is the forest where a mother raises her young. The ocean where a whale migrates. The wetland where birds nest. The desert where wildlife searches for water. Every habitat holds lives worth protecting.

When we protect the planet, we protect animals from hunger, displacement, pollution, and extinction.

Today, choose one action:
Pick up plastic.
Plant native flowers.
Use less single-use waste.
Support habitat protection.
Speak up for wildlife.

Every choice matters because every animal matters.

“What if our religion was each other? If our practice was our life? What if the temple was the Earth? If forests were our church? If holy water - the rivers, lakes, and oceans? What if meditation was our relationships? If the Teacher was life? If wisdom was knowledge? If love was the center of our being?”

Clergy and faith leader signatories needed! Please share this post!

In consultation with a Jewish and Muslim colleague, our Executive Director wrote an interfaith letter urging the U.S. Senate to reject Section 12006 of the House Farm Bill. We need over 200 signatures to make an impact, and right now we have about 190 legitimate signatories. If you are a faith leader, please sign! And everyone, please ask clergy and faith leaders in your network to do the same.

Section 12006 has the cutesy name "Save our Bacon," but it is quite serious: it would nullify animal welfare laws enacted directly by voters in California and Massachusetts (saying, for example, that mother pigs must be housed in pens large enough that they are able to turn around, as opposed to industry standard "gestation crates" for months on end); it would give Congress the authority to preempt more than 600 state and local laws concerning food safety and animal welfare and other matters; and it would permanently strip states of the ability to regulate how meat sold within their borders is produced.

Faith traditions ranging from Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, Unitarian Universalist, and many others share a deep concern for the unnecessary suffering of animals and for the integrity of democratic processes. The letter has signatories from a wide range of faith traditions in 34 states.

Please share this post with clergy and faith leaders you know; here's where they sign: https://tinyurl.com/individual-SOB , and here's the full text of the letter itself: https://tinyurl.com/interfaith-SOB

If you are a faith leader, please sign! And everyone, please ask clergy and faith leaders in your network to do the same. We only need a handful more signatures before this is ready to go. Please share this post! Thank you!
