At the end of the month, those who can, meet at the fellowship building of the Godley church of Christ to take an exam based strictly on the Bible text. Those who are unable to meet with us can have the exam emailed to them. The purpose of the exam is to help motivate study and learning (no one will be embarrassed in any way). MATTHEW STUDY GUIDE

The quiz for Matthew will consist of true/false and multiple choice questions from the verses below. There will also be few bonus questions that asks you give the chapter of a given subject matter. For example: What chapter discusses the transfiguration of Jesus? The bonus questions will not count against you if you miss them. Study, learn and grow!

1:23 - Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel”
(which means, God with us).

2:6 - And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.

3:11 - I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

4:4 - But he answered, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

5:5 - Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

6:19-20 - Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.

7:21 - Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

8:10 - When Jesus heard this, he marveled and said to those who followed him, “Truly, I tell you, with no one in Israel have I found such faith.

9:37-38 - Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.

10:32 - So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven,

11:28 - Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

12:50 - For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.

13:22 - As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful.

14:23 - And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone.

15:8 - This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me

16:24 - Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.

17:5 - He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.”

18:14 - So it is not the will of my Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish

19:29 - And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name's sake, will receive a hundredfold and will inherit eternal life.

20:28 - even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

21:43 - Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people producing its fruits.

22:37 - And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.”

23:37 - O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!

24:42 - Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.

25:34 - Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.’

26:39 - And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.”

27:43 - He trusts in God; let God deliver him now, if he desires him. For he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’

28:19 - Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit

KEY VERSES IN HEBREWS
Below are listed some of the key verses from Hebrews. On the exam for this class you will have to fill in some blanks from these verses (about 1 or 2 blanks per verse). The missing words will be significant words (not words like: of, and, he, etc.). Note: the passages below are from the ESV. If you prefer to use a different translation, that's fine, many of the words will be the same anyway (just tell me what translation you are using). Please let me know if you have any questions. Our exam is scheduled for 4:00, August 27 at the fellowship building of the Godley church of Christ. Please let me know if you would like me to email the exam to you. Thanks for participating with us!!

1:1-4: “Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.”

2:1-3: “Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard.”

3:1-3: “Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God's house. For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses—as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself.”

3:12-13: “Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.”

4:12-16: “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account. Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

5:9: “And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him.”

5:12: “For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food.”

6:4-6: “For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, to restore them again to repentance, since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt.”

6:19: “We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain.”

7:25: “Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.”

8:6-7: “But as it is, Christ has obtained a ministry that is as much more excellent than the old as the covenant he mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises. For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion to look for a second.”

9:16-17: For where a will is involved, the death of the one who made it must be established. For a will takes effect only at death, since it is not in force as long as the one who made it is alive.

9:27: “And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.”

10:1: “For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near.”

10:24-25: “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.”

11:1: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”

11:6: “And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.”

12:1-2: “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.”

13:14: “For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come.”

AUGUST: HEBREWS
Begin reading and studying the book of Hebrews whenever you would like. Here are some recommendations. Adapt them as you see fit.
(1) Aim for daily study from Hebrews (or, as many days as possible).
(2) Take the time to read the entire book at least 2 or 3 times during the month. (It only takes around an hour.) I consider this one of the most beneficial things I do.
(3) Do your own study before consulting any commentaries or other study materials. The only possible exception to this that I recommend is reading the introduction section of a good commentary. I will post a brief introduction that I have written.
(4) Take notes, write in your Bible, underline or circle key words, pay attention to words that are repeated. Make a Hebrews notebook! Ok, type on your computer if you must!
(5) After obtaining a pretty good fundamental understanding of the book, then you may want to dig into some things that you are having difficulty understanding.
(6) Become familiar with the outline of the book. Seek to understand what the author's purpose is.
(7) Think about applications that naturally flow from the text.
(8) Now develop your own plan of attack! You will likely adapt it as you go, but have a plan.

Our exam will be scheduled for Sunday, August 27. (A time will be announced later.) If you can't make it to Godley for the exam, I will gladly send it to you by through email.

Do not be overly intimidated by the exam. There is no failure for the one who puts forth an honest effort in studying God's Word! Only blessings! We are not trying to get an A. We are trying to grow!

By the middle of the month, I will enlighten you about the exam. For now, simply study with the purpose of learning the book of Hebrews.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks for studying with us!! It is not too late to encourage a friend to participate with us!!

Register by Tomorrow! August is upon us and that means Hebrews is too! There are many reasons to study God’s Word of course, but here are some of the benefits of studying with GBI:

(1) It requires some accountability. It is really easy to get busy and therefore neglect Bible study if there is no accountability. In addition, not only is there accountability to study, but also to learn. That is why schools have tests!

(2) There is a set curriculum of study. August is Hebrews; September- Genesis; October- Matthew; November- Ezra/Nehemiah; December- James/1 & 2 Peter. Wouldn’t it be great to vastly increase your knowledge in all of these books by the year’s end?

(3) We have “fellowship” while we engage in this pursuit together. Studying together not only deepens knowledge, but relationships too!

(4) Study with us for what it will do for you! God’s Word produces growth (Rom. 10:17).

(5) Study with us so that your influence can be increased. As you grow, you become more useful in the kingdom and a brighter light in this dark world!

(6) You have flexibility in this study. Your day-to-day study is up to you, though I will give some suggestions. You can study our class two days a week or seven.

Enroll today. It is pain free. It doesn’t cost anything. You can’t possibly regret it. Just comment below, send me a text, call me, email me, or send a smoke signal.

Good News!! We are going to get started back up in August. In the next week or so I'll post the fall schedule.

There will be no course for the month of May. We will take a break, regroup and try to get more involved when we start back up. Having said that, keep studying! "Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth." (2 Tim. 2:15).

5:25 - “Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her”

6:1-4 - “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.”
