Raising Hope for Romania

Raising Hope for Romania Raising Hope for Romania is an effort to raise support for the Lord's work in Iasi, Romania. How should we respond? This was their idea! Box 6, Godley, TX 76044.

Raising Hope for Romania is an effort of the Godley church of Christ, working together with other congregations of the Lord's people, and individual Christians, to raise funds so that the Gospel of Christ can be more widely preached in Iasi, Romania. Several years ago my family, along with two others (the Hollands and the Welches), established a small church in Iasi, Romania. While some of our mor

e mature converts in Iasi left the country seeking employment, others proved less than sincere, but three have remained steadfast and strong as they continue to meet together each Lord’s Day, rotating between having worship in each of their very small apartments. These men (all in their early 40’s), have been without an American missionary presence for about 10 years now. They have proven themselves worthy of our assistance, remaining strong under difficult circumstances. By assistance, I don’t mean giving them money, but helping them evangelize. Though their earnings in a month is about as much as we make in two days, they never ask us for money for themselves, but they do ask for us to help them reach lost souls with the Gospel. In March of this year I made a trip to Iasi, as well as to Cluj, Romania. I spent several hours with all three men discussing the work there. Here are some mutual conclusions that we have drawn and the first steps we would like to take with your help:

(1) Rent a small space for worship. The men are not having any success inviting others to join them in their apartments for worship. This is no exaggeration… their apartments are around 7’ x 13’. Perhaps you can understand the credibility problem with inviting others into a situation like that, especially when religion in that country idolizes ornate buildings. (2) Print a flyer advertising Bible study materials. They have around 2 1/2 lockers full of books, courses, and tracts that we translated and printed while we lived there. They actually showed me a flyer they had made without any prompting on our part. It was very crude because of their lack of ability in that area, and using a very dated computer and printer. We are just about to print that flyer. If it is well received, we will plan to print more. (3) Begin running Facebook campaigns to get our message regularly in front of thousands. These Facebook campaigns will target the city of Iasi and will show up in the resident’s Facebook “Newsfeed.” I did something similar to this a few weeks ago in Cluj where I preached a Gospel meeting. Around 6000 people saw the advertisement for the cost of $40. We can write articles, offer free Bible correspondence courses, and invite people to services (after we secure a meeting place). We would like to run such campaigns each month so that thousands of people repeatedly see the message of Christ and are offered opportunities for Bible study and worship. (4) Start having one or two Gospel Meetings (or other similar events) in Iasi each year. This would be a highly advertised event. Before the meeting in Cluj, around 3000 flyers were handed out, posters were put up around town, advertisements were placed in two newspapers, and we advertised through Facebook, as well as by word of mouth. One of the reasons I agreed to preach this meeting was so that I could get a first-hand look at such an event. We did have around nine visitors at the meeting, and I’m hopeful we learned things to help us be more effective in reaching a greater number of people next time. Will you pray about having fellowship with us in this work? The small congregation in Godley where I preach has generously positioned itself behind the work agreeing to pay for my travel up to two times per year (a cost of around $4000 per year). Here is our budget for the work in Iasi, Romania:
Renting a small meeting place - $400/m
Printing materials - $150/m
Heating the building - $40/m (The three men have agreed to pay the light bill and for the water.) Facebook campaigns - $120/m (or, $40 for one)
Website - $50 (we just created a website and have begun archiving Bible lessons in Romanian for Iasi and the Lord’s church throughout the country, as well as for outreach)
Gospel Meetings and other evangelistic efforts - $150/m

My goal during this phase of the work is to raise around $500/m of support. Paul Holland is also seeking to do the same (plus raise money for his travel expenses). We would like to have all of the funds in place in the next couple months so we can start renting a small space in September. Your prayers and your financial help would be greatly appreciated. Please consider helping us with just $25 a month. If you are able to contribute to this work, funds may be sent to the Godley Church of Christ, P.O. Please earmark the check: Romania Mission Fund. Please contact me any time if you questions. May God continue to bless our work for Him, and the building up of the body of His Son.

REPORT ON SPRING 2023 IASI CAMPAIGN

The four Americans of our campaign group just returned a few days ago. One very special aspect of this campaign was the fellowship in the Lord’s work we enjoyed with five of our Romanian brethren. A total of three brothers and two sisters in Christ traveled from the far west side of the country to the far northeast side to work together for our Lord. Each was very valuable and of kindred spirit. It would be difficult to find five people anywhere that could be so pleasant to work with!

The purpose of this campaign was basically four-fold:
To give Joshua D***s more experience before moving to Arad, Romania next spring.
To probe methods of outreach that might be effectively used in the future, and hone them in.
To be of encouragement to Florin and Costel.
To begin some new relationships with Iasians that may prove fruitful with time.

Joshua did the vast majority of the planning and prep work for the campaign… which I believe was another great experience for him. He (and we) were also immersed in problem solving from the start as we found out that there was a miscommunication concerning our venue for the two seminars we were conducting. Problem solving and “crisis management” is mandatory for missionaries. Josh and the rest of our crew were able to make the most of it and perhaps found an even better meeting place (a perfect conference room on the upper floor of the Palace Mall (everyone in Iasi knows where it is). The folks at the mall were extremely good to work with, even having every solution we needed for PowerPoints and everything else.

One discovery we certainly made was that Facebook advertising can be used very effectively for events. I believe I am correct in saying that all of the visitors we had at our seminars were contacts through that means. We look forward to further honing that medium and other forms of mass media for next time and putting a little more into it, and using it as a means to make one-on-one contacts.

It is always good to see Florin and Costel, both pleasant, knowledgable and conscientious Christians. But it was especially good for them to have fellowship time with their brothers and sisters from Romania. They just don’t get these opportunities enough. We really need to do more to make fellowship possible for them.

We conducted two seminars during the campaign. One was a “secular” leadership seminar which was conducted by the four Americans who made the trip. It certainly seems there was interest in the topic. Our motivation here was to offer a free seminar that would be of benefit to Romanians and also allow us to get to know a few people. We also used it as an opportunity to invite them to the Bible seminar which followed it each day. Some did stay and visited for some time after the program. We were able to get contact information for most and hope to stay in touch with them and further kindle these relationships. Some have already “friended” us on Facebook. Interestingly, amongst those who attended, one was a young doctor and two were nursing students.

Some good things occurred on the trip, but the most exciting thing is what we have learned and can apply in future efforts, whether in Iasi, Arad or elsewhere. I can honestly say that I am more optimistic about the work than I have been in some time! Most of the optimism has come to light through a team working together. Nothing is quick and easy about the Lord’s work in Romania, but I feel like there are some open doors for the Gospel. Please be praying!

FALL 2022 ROMANIA TRIP

Greetings brethren! I arrived back from Romania Monday night around midnight or so. It was a beneficial trip and I want to share some of the highlights from both Cluj and Iasi.

IASI
It was a blessing to spend some time with Costel and Florin, our brothers in Christ. They are both really good men and are convicted concerning the truth of God. We conducted no major outreach effort, but a campaign is planned for next spring that will be designed not only for outreach but for giving mission-minded young people a taste of Iasi and mission work. This visit was mainly to spend time with our brothers so that all of us could be encouraged through Christian fellowship, prayer, Bible study and worship together.

Spending time with them has helped me to understand better where they are and the needs they have. Two particular thoughts that have been spawned from this is their need for additional Christian fellowship and some kind of additional Bible study material. (Paul Holland has been sending them one lesson every week for some time now.)

Concerning fellowship, if they are able to, we would like to help them with transportation costs to visit the church in Cluj perhaps two or three times a year, and/or, have other Christians visit them in Iasi. This is not easy as the nearest churches are around eight hours or more away. However, I do believe it is workable.

Though I'm still trying to work out in my mind exactly what form this will take, I have the idea of writing some kind of Bible study material that will be useful to them, and to others in Romania as well.

Unfortunately, I was not able to meet with several people whom we have known for years. One was out of the country and another was gone on vacation. I was able to at least talk to a couple people on the phone. I try to keep a connection with them when I go over, praying that the future will bring open hearts for the Gospel.

CLUJ
The church in Cluj has been instrumental in offering relief to Ukranian refugees. While many have merely used Cluj as a hub to go elsewhere, some have remained in Cluj.

The small church there has helped with literally hundreds of meals, housing arrangements, transportation needs, and a host of other needs of the refugees. The work has slowed slightly it seems. Cooking meals has evolved into having a three day a week food pantry available for the refugees. A large van full of food and other necessities vanishes within a couple hours on those days, with a line beginning to form about two hours before they open.

The preacher and another brother in Christ (Audi), continue to make trips into Ukraine with needed supplies every week or two. They are typically taken to brethren within an hour or so of the Romanian border. From there, the supplies are distributed to other churches as well. While I was there we loaded twelve generators that were taken during my last full day in Cluj. These brothers left between 7 and 8 that morning and returned between 7 and 8 the next morning.

The Sunday I was there around nine or ten Ukranians were present in the assembly, only a couple being Christians. We enjoyed a nice time of eating and visiting afterwards, though the visiting is hampered by the language barrier.

But fortunately (or through providence) one Ukranian brother named Ivan, knows English, so Dragos typically preaches in Romanian, another brother (Radu) translates it into English, and Ivan translates the lesson into Ukranian. Thus, all hear the Gospel in their own language, just not miraculously like in Acts 2.

I asked Ivan what made him decide to come to Cluj, Romania of all places. His response was that he wanted to go where he could be most useful to the Lord's church! What a great attitude in the midst of an unfathomable situation!

While in Cluj I was also able to conduct a short "seminar" (as the Romanians call it), at Cluj. The seminar was especially geared for the Ukranians. The theme used was: Finding Stability in an Unstable World. The lessons were well received. One Ukranian lady opened up afterwards and told of her two sons that were fighting in the war, as well as her daughter in law who was expecting a child. She was extremely concerned with the situation and asked for prayers. The next day at the seminar a Ukranian man mentioned afterwards that the lesson on "Love that Never Ends" would be very helpful to him in his marriage. Please pray for the work at Cluj that not only will they have opportunities to help with temporal needs, but also eternal needs.

Through the help of our God we pray for the Gospel of peace to be spread in truth in love to every corner of the earth. May God help us to arise and send for the message and arise and take the message to a dying world. Your prayers are solicited and appreciated for the work of our Great God in Iasi and Cluj.

Your brother in Christ,
Daren Schroeder

Unfortunately the spring campaign to Romania had to be cancelled today. The flight that they were supposed to take into Romania was cancelled and there were no other good options. The problem, as you might have guessed, is the Caronavirus. There are much fewer cases in Romania than in the U.S. but some are projecting it to skyrocket, since many Romanians have returned from Italy. If that happens, the borders of Romania could be shut down. We'll hopefully try again in June! Your prayers would be greatly appreciated.
