REPORT ON SPRING 2023 IASI CAMPAIGN
The four Americans of our campaign group just returned a few days ago. One very special aspect of this campaign was the fellowship in the Lord’s work we enjoyed with five of our Romanian brethren. A total of three brothers and two sisters in Christ traveled from the far west side of the country to the far northeast side to work together for our Lord. Each was very valuable and of kindred spirit. It would be difficult to find five people anywhere that could be so pleasant to work with!
The purpose of this campaign was basically four-fold:
To give Joshua D***s more experience before moving to Arad, Romania next spring.
To probe methods of outreach that might be effectively used in the future, and hone them in.
To be of encouragement to Florin and Costel.
To begin some new relationships with Iasians that may prove fruitful with time.
Joshua did the vast majority of the planning and prep work for the campaign… which I believe was another great experience for him. He (and we) were also immersed in problem solving from the start as we found out that there was a miscommunication concerning our venue for the two seminars we were conducting. Problem solving and “crisis management” is mandatory for missionaries. Josh and the rest of our crew were able to make the most of it and perhaps found an even better meeting place (a perfect conference room on the upper floor of the Palace Mall (everyone in Iasi knows where it is). The folks at the mall were extremely good to work with, even having every solution we needed for PowerPoints and everything else.
One discovery we certainly made was that Facebook advertising can be used very effectively for events. I believe I am correct in saying that all of the visitors we had at our seminars were contacts through that means. We look forward to further honing that medium and other forms of mass media for next time and putting a little more into it, and using it as a means to make one-on-one contacts.
It is always good to see Florin and Costel, both pleasant, knowledgable and conscientious Christians. But it was especially good for them to have fellowship time with their brothers and sisters from Romania. They just don’t get these opportunities enough. We really need to do more to make fellowship possible for them.
We conducted two seminars during the campaign. One was a “secular” leadership seminar which was conducted by the four Americans who made the trip. It certainly seems there was interest in the topic. Our motivation here was to offer a free seminar that would be of benefit to Romanians and also allow us to get to know a few people. We also used it as an opportunity to invite them to the Bible seminar which followed it each day. Some did stay and visited for some time after the program. We were able to get contact information for most and hope to stay in touch with them and further kindle these relationships. Some have already “friended” us on Facebook. Interestingly, amongst those who attended, one was a young doctor and two were nursing students.
Some good things occurred on the trip, but the most exciting thing is what we have learned and can apply in future efforts, whether in Iasi, Arad or elsewhere. I can honestly say that I am more optimistic about the work than I have been in some time! Most of the optimism has come to light through a team working together. Nothing is quick and easy about the Lord’s work in Romania, but I feel like there are some open doors for the Gospel. Please be praying!
