June’s Story
Telling time with our church bell

When the city is quiet, you can hear the church bells chime. Count the bells, and they will tell you what time it is. It’s a sound we’ve become so used to that we hardly pay any attention to it anymore.

The sound carries far across the city. Before smartphones—back when I was a child, lol—I would listen for the church bell to tell me the time and whether it was time to head home.

It’s a simple tradition, but it’s one of those familiar sounds that has always been part of life in our city.

Facts
The First Congregational Church in Gloversville was completed in the early 1880s and appears in photographs and records by the 1890s.
* The church’s bell system evolved over time. Records of the tower indicate a Meneely bell installation and note that a 10-bell chime was installed in 1923, giving the tower its more elaborate chime sound.
* The tower itself may be older than portions of the present church structure, according to bell historians.

Looking for handheld can openers for the food pantry. We are seeing a lot more homeless people coming to the food pantry. Unfortunately not many of the canned goods have pop top openings so being able to give them a can opener would allow us to give them more canned fruits and veggies. Thanks in advance for donating. ~ Lenora Evans

Busy, busy, busy food pantry distribution this morning! Fourteen volunteers assisted a total of 236 people from 76 families consisting of a total of 128 adults, 37 seniors, and 70 children. Pasta, rice, cereal, bread, meat, eggs, canned fruits and veggies, salads, pears, nuts, raisins, dates, potatoes, and oil, as well as diapers and baby formula were available to those needing them. Many thanks to everyone who volunteers their time to make this outreach possible to the many hungry people in our local community.

Don't forget this is tonight. I will be at the church at 6:45 to set up our Zoom link. You are welcome to join us there.

Now that we have completed the Diversity Survey for the Mohawk Hudson Chapter of UCC, Barbara VanOlpen would like to share the results with our congregation. This is the first step in our search for a new pastor. Hopefully one that meets our needs now, and in the future. There will be a Zoom meeting on Tuesday, May 26 at 7PM. Zoom link below. For those who would prefer, we will set up a Zoom station in the sanctuary. You will be able to see everyone on our screens and you will be able to ask questions in real time. Please consider attending this very important meeting. The future of FCUCC Gloversville is at stake.
