Located in America's oldest seaport, Gloucester Assembly of God is a Pentecostal congregation serving the communities of Cape Ann. We affirm that it is still the great desire of Jesus Christ to give us life in all of its fullness. The same Jesus who healed the sick, restored the brokenhearted, and overcame the power of death is the same Jesus who sees and knows us. He can and will bring healing, restoration, and a realization of life in all of its fullness.

"Jesus...stands above Christianity as the judge of all it has done in his name" - Albert Nolan, Jesus Before Christianity, p.5

“It may be that Christians, notwithstanding corporate worship, common prayer, and all their fellowship in service, may still be left to their loneliness. The final break-through to fellowship does not occur, because, though they have fellowship with one another as believers and as devout people, they do not have fellowship as the undevout, as sinners. The pious fellowship permits no one to be a sinner. So everybody must conceal his sin from himself and from the fellowship. We dare not be sinners. Many Christians are unthinkably horrified when a real sinner is suddenly discovered among the righteous. So we remain alone with our sin, living in lies and hypocrisy. The fact is that we are sinners!”

How honest is our faith allowed to be? How much truth are we able to tell when we talk with God? Ronald Rolheiser writes, “We think God is like a parent who wants to see us only when we are not distracted, not angry, not emotionally or sexually preoccupied. We think God is like a parent who wants to see us only on our best behavior…. We don’t tell God what is really going on in our lives. We tell God what we think God wants to hear.” (Ronald Rolheiser, Prayer: Our Deepest Longing, 6)

Psalm 13 opens with a raw heart cry: “How long, LORD? Will you forget me forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?” This is bold, honest prayer.

Ann and Barry Ulanov, in their book about prayer entitled Primary Speech, tell us “In prayer we say who in fact we are – not who we should be, nor who we wish we were, but who we are. …God hears all the voices that speak out of us – our vocal prayer, the prayer said in our minds, the unvoiced longing arising from our hearts, the many voices of which we are not conscious but which cry out eloquently.” I hope we find comfort in this. God is listening to us even when we have trouble expressing ourselves.

This week we lit the second candle of Advent: Peace. Peace is not just the absence of war or conflict. We seek the peace that comes from a relationship with Jesus Christ.
“Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭5‬:‭1‬-‭2‬ ‭NIV‬‬

During October, the congregation showed our appreciation for Pastor Jim and Donna.

1 Timothy 5:17 (NIV): “The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching.”
This verse underscores the value of honoring those who lead and teach in the church.

This always challenges me: "We may 'believe' in God, but the forces, the institutions, and the myths that give shape to our daily lives are largely secular – money, markets, machines, media, and managers. In theory we are believers; it is only in practice that we are atheists." (Sam Keen, Hymns to an Unknown God, 12)

“…what is unshakable is not our faith, exposed as it is to all kinds of anxiety and error, but God, who always comes to us anew, to deliver us from the grip of our anxieties and errors.” – Paul Tournier, The Person Reborn, 164

“There are selves within us that we despise that we cannot forgive, that appall us with their fantasies and disgust us with their weakness. Jesus has already crossed over to them, and it is time to have compassion on these ruined and sick parts of ourselves that he is embracing with the arms of his love. He is waiting for us to accept healing of our self-hatred. It is time to cross over and meet Jesus embracing the failed and ugly selves of the heart, and healing us.” – Martin L. Smith
