On Wednesday, August 14, 2024, 9 AM, the Gloucester City Cemeteries Committee is hosting a FREE national gravestone preservation workshop, the 5th Annual 48 State Tour (https://48statetour.com/ ). This public event is to be held at First Parish Burial Ground, Gloucester, MA. This all-day event is hands-on. The goal of this national tour is to help save America’s cemeteries.

For nearly 25 years Jonathan Appell has completed restoration projects and training covering every state in the continental United States and along the way, also restored
the oldest gravestone in America, “The Knight’s Tomb” in Jamestown, VA

At Seaside Cemetery on Saturday, October 14th, from 2 to 4PM a free 400+ cemetery event, “Bad Choices, Bad Luck”, will give you the opportunity to meet a group of people who died in Gloucester between 1905-1933 and were buried in the City Home Lot of Seaside Cemetery (88R Langsford Street, Gloucester, MA 01930). Rain date Sunday, October 15th at 2PM.

Present day Gloucester locals will assume the persona of those interred in the City Home Lot so that their individual stories can be shared with you.

The stories told come from extensive research by Sharron Cohen who unearthed the details of those buried in the City Home Lot.

Are you interested in Gloucester’s West Parish during the Victorian period?
On this in-person tour “The Families of West Parish ” presented by Lois Hamilton and Dani Stotzer, you'll discover the captivating tales of the individuals buried in this historic Victorian cemetery. A guest speaker from Wellspring House Inc. will share the amazing story of a wealthy African American family, the Freemans, who are buried in Bray Cemetery and Cedar Rock Gardens of West Parish have generously donated flowers so that guests can lay a flower at each grave.

Park at the West Parish School parking lot at 10 Concord Street, Gloucester, MA 01930. It is a short 0.2 mile walk from the school to Bray Cemetery.

Bray Cemetery is small but lies on a steep downward slope and the ground is uneven. The cemetery is not wheelchair accessible. Wear comfortable, sturdy shoes and bring your sense of adventure.

Two Freeman stones have been restored and preserved!

We will be at the cemetery Saturday at 11:00 to check on the Freeman stones. With wind and trees we’ve been worried. We have a preservationist meeting us there to assess the remaining repairs. Contact Sandy Barry for more info.
