FINAL SUMMER CARILLON CONCERT
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 4th at 6:30PM

Dear Friends,

A popular summer tradition concludes this week at Our Lady of Good Voyage Parish and the Catholic Community of Gloucester & Rockport! Our Summer Carillon Concerts will conclude on Friday, September 4th at 6:30pm!

Once again, Luann Pallazola. Cynthia Cafasso, and Thomas Dort have prepared programs that include patriotic melodies, popular hymns and songs, and classical and international music, along with selections especially for children!

This Friday, a Boston-based orchestral composer for opera and ballet has written a special piece for our carillon. Mary Bichner's composition, “Nossa Senhora,” will be performed for the first time at Friday's concert. Mary Bichner has composed her first piece for the carillon and it is written in the key of A-flat major to match the vivid colors found in the church's interior and exterior (A-flat, for warm vibrant red; C natural, for vibrant yellow and/or gold; and E-flat for cobalt blue). For more information about the composer and the piece, click the following link: "Nossa Senhora".

Our Summer Carillon Concerts are an awesome opportunity for the whole family to gather and enjoy the gift of music with friends, neighbors, and fellow parishioners!

This week, in addition to the carillon concert, Our Lady's Guild will be offering cold drinks, chips and snacks, and ice cream for sale. There are various raffles for Lego, Lottery Tickets, Stonewall Kitcehn baskets, and a 50/50 cash prizes. Bring a friend! Bring your family!

For more information, please contact Luann Pallazola at [email protected]. Spread the word! All are invited! All are welcome! Please join us!

Peace and blessings to all,
Father Jim

Dear Friends,

A wise person recently wrote: "Grief is not just the weight of loss. It is the echo of the love that once filled our lives...Grief is not something to be fixed or avoided. It is a sign that we cared more than we even realized."

In the midst of our mourning for Father Ben Madu, I am heartened to hear again and again how much all of you loved him and appreciated his ministry here in the Catholic Community of Gloucester & Rockport. We have also received touching messages from many people who came to know Father Ben at Salem Hospital.

As I write these words, we still do not know for sure how Father Ben died. What we do know is what we feel: anger, disbelief, sadness, and compassion for our dear friend's family and friends. What we do here when we grieve is lean on each other. What we do here when we grieve is gather in prayer and fellowship.

As one small step toward healing our broken hearts, all friends, neighbors, and fellow parishioners are invited to join me for a Special Morning of Prayer on Saturday, August 1st in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church.

We will begin with a Mass for the People at 9:00am. After Mass and Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, we will offer Morning Prayer from the Office of the Dead in memory of Father Ben. We will then enter into a period of silent adoration during which time all are encouraged to spend a few moments in prayer for Father Ben and for all those we have loved and lost during the past year. We will conlude at 11:30am with the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Holy Rosary and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.

Please note that we have been asked by the Archdiocese of Boston to delay the celebration of Memorial Masses for Father Ben until after his funeral has been arranged by his bishop and family in Nigeria. Sometime soon, my hope is that we will be able to announce a schedule of Memorial Masses for Father Ben at all three of our parish churches.

May God bless Father Ben Madu. May God bless all who mourn.

Peace and blessings to all,
Father Jim

A Summer Blessing

May you walk with God
This summer
In whatever you do
Wherever you go

Walking with God means…
Walking with honesty
And with courage,
Walking with love
And respect
And concern for the feelings of others

May you talk to God
This summer
And every day and
In every situation

Talking with God means…
Praying words of praise
For the beauty of creation
Saying prayers of thanks
For friends and good times,
Asking God’s help
In all your decisions
Expressing sorrow
When you have failed

May you talk with God
Every day. Amen.

SAD NEWS

Dear Fellow Parishioner,

In April 2022, Father Ben Madu joined the Catholic Community of Gloucester & Rockport as an assistant priest at our weekend liturgies. Each Sunday at Saint Ann Church, Saint Joachim Church, and Our Lady of Good Voyage Church, Father Ben arrives with a broad smile, a stirring homily, and a heart filled with joy for the Lord.

Our pastoral team, myself included, is devastated by the news that Father Ben must return to Nigeria because of strict religious visa requirements that seem to provide little support for much-needed missionary priests. We are further heartbroken that Father Ben must leave sooner than expected so that now it has become impossible to thank him as we would like.

At the same time, we are overwhelmed with love and gratitude for Father Ben and his ministry among us. We join the staff and patients at Salem Hospital, where Father Ben serves as priest-chaplain, in giving thanks for this holy priest and his good work.

This coming weekend, June 27th and 28th, donation baskets will be placed near the altars of our churches to collect cards and monetary gifts to support Father Ben and his journey home to Nigeria. As always, your generosity will be much appreciated.

As Father Ben leaves our parishes, we pray for him, for his family, and for his safe travels. We pray, too, for all religious workers and missionary priests: that their good work may be valued and appreciated not just by the people they serve, but also by our civic leaders.

Godspeed, Father Ben! Thank you! We miss you already!

Peace and blessings to all,
Father Jim
