Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church

Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church Gathered in 1779, we are proud of our heritage as the first Universalist church in the US, and look to the future of liberal religion today.

Join us in person at 10 AM Sundays or on our YouTube channel. Welcome to Gloucester’s oldest church building, built in 1806. The church opens its doors as a community center and performance venue, hosting farmers' markets, concerts, meditation sessions, workshops, classes, lectures, recovery meetings, and other events that sustain and uplift the community. We are located in the heart of Gloucester

’s Historic District at the corner of Middle and Church Streets. The church is the home of America’s first Universalist Society, founded by Rev. John Murray in 1779. Our lantern steeple has guided generations of mariners into port as our founders fought for women’s rights and the separation of church and state as a cornerstone of our democracy. Today, more than 200 years later, our lighted steeple remains a focal point in Gloucester’s skyline.

New Celebration at Entryway Gallery, Open 2-5 Saturdays
Leading up to Pride Day, the Entryway Gallery is proud to offer photographic portraits and monographs from the book To Survive on This Shore: Photographs and Interviews with Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Older Adults. Representations of older transgender people are nearly absent from our culture and those that do exist are often one-dimensional. For over five years, photographer Jess T. Dugan and social worker Vanessa Fabbre traveled throughout the United States creating To Survive on This Shore, seeking subjects whose lived experiences exist within the complex intersections of gender identity, age, race, ethnicity, sexuality, socioeconomic class, and geographic location, they traveled from coast to coast, to big cities and small towns, documenting the life stories of this important but largely underrepresented group of older adults. The featured individuals have a wide variety of life narratives spanning the last ninety years, offering an important historical record of transgender experience and activism in the United States.

The resulting portraits and interviews provide a nuanced view into the struggles and joys of growing older as a transgender person and, offer a poignant reflection on what it means to live authentically despite seemingly insurmountable odds.

The exhibition comes to us courtesy of the Arlington UU Church. For more information on the book see www.tosurviveonthisshore.com .

The Gallery will be open 2-5 on Saturdays and during events at the Church.
