Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Gloucester, MA

Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Gloucester, MA The Mt. Pleasant Cemetery Assoc. is a 501(c)(13) that cares for and maintains the cemetery located at the top of Mt. Pleasant Avenue, East Gloucester, MA. in 1941.

A Brief History of the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery

In 1889 local fisheries merchant Amos Story conveyed a parcel of land at the eastern end of Mt. Pleasant Avenue to The Mt. Pleasant Annex Association for the purpose of creating a cemetery. This entity became The Mt. Pleasant Cemetery Association, Inc. The purposes of The Mt. Pleasant Cemetery Association are to administer and operate the cemetery, rec

eive and acquire additions, sell lots and burial rights, and improve and maintain the cemetery. In addition the association endeavors to make the cemetery a peaceful, dignified, and beautiful place, as well as a reverent symbol for the dead and a valuable link to the heritage of our community. Pleasant Cemetery was laid out in the Victorian or Park style. This type of cemetery became popular with the opening, in 1831, of the Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge Massachusetts. Mt. Auburn was America’s first cemetery of this type, incorporating trees, and landscape elements and featuring many sculptural and obelisk type of gravestones, in marked contrast to the flat slabs seen in colonial era burial grounds. Several fine examples of obelisk stones can be seen at Mt. Pleasant. The cemetery became the final resting place for a number of the notable Cape Ann painters who lived and worked in East Gloucester, including Frederick Mulhaupt, Oscar Anderson, and Emile Gruppe. Also buried in the cemetery is the well known character actress Jessie Ralph, who appeared in over fifty Hollywood films playing opposite many stars including Greta Garbo, Errol Flynn, Henry Fonda, and W. C. Fields. Jessie Ralph’s original last name was Chambers, and when she died in Gloucester in 1944, she was buried in the Chambers family lot at Mt.Pleasant.

Thank you to the City of Gloucester Historical Commission, Community Preservation Committee, City Councillors, Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken, and the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery Committee for supporting the restoration of our Civil War Monument!

With the positive vote from all committees funding has been granted to begin Phase 1 of our plan to restore all Civil War graves in our cemetery.

Phase 1: Restoration of 1867 Civil War Monument
Phase 2: Marking all unmarked Civil War Veterans - the Sons of the Union will assist in getting markers, possibly free of charge
Phase 3: Cleaning and repairing the stones of all marked Civil War Veterans - funding not applied for yet

I look forward to updating you as the project moves forward!

One down - one to go! Thank you Jeff Gray for taking down the trees that have been uprooting our fence for years!!!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!!

As the saying goes....many hands make light work and in this case it is only about a half dozen hands that keep Mt. Pleasant the beautiful little cemetery that it is and due to a recent change in health for one of the key board member it is getting harder to keep Mt. Pleasant operating as it does.

Mt. Pleasant is NOT run by the city and does not have any religious affiliations- it is a 501c(13) that is operated by dedicated volunteers who have been doing it for MANY years.

It may seem there would not be much to do, but the work is endless with lot sales, burials, landscaping, flags for Veterans, and research of long lost relatives.

We have started one of our two ongoing projects, requesting funds to restore our obelisk and are hoping to digitize the cemetery, but neither of these can be completed without more hands on the everyday tasks.

We are actively looking for:

ACTIVE BOARD MEMBERS - namely someone who can take on the day to day task of answering calls and fielding them appropriately.

Have a special talent to share? Let us know! We have many opportunities that you could help with.

PLEASE consider volunteering in 2016!

MEMORIAL DAY FLAG VOLUNTEERS

The Gloucester Veterans Services are currently seeking a few volunteers to help them with flag distribution and placement for Memorial Day!

Gloucester Veterans Services has asked us if we had anyone who would be willing to take this on as a project. We are currently stretched to capacity with very few volunteers, but if you or someone you know would be willing to take this on, or can help in ANY way please contact either myself, Mary-Kathryn Gray @ [email protected] or Lucia @ [email protected].

Many hands make light work! Help if you can!
