Stephen Catholic Church as been of service to Catholics in this community since 1885. Mary's in Aspen, celebrated the first Mass in the home of Mr. James Lynch on April 14, 1885. There were six people in attendance. A modest frame structure was built at Tenth and Blake. Stephen Catholic Church of Glenwood Springs, Colorado was dedicated November 14, 1886. Construction of the church at Tenth and G

rand started in April of 1942. Under the guidance of Fr. Clarence Kessler, men of the parish spent their weekends hewing with hammer and chisel the red stone which was used to build the church. The stone was then transported to the building site. The church was dedicated by Archbishop Urban J. Vehr on April 14, 1943. McMillan, our pastor from 1996 to 2013, was a big part of the building of our current church, which was finished in 2003. Our present location is 1885 Blake Avenue, the "1885" depicting the year of the first Mass said in Glenwood Springs. Auxiliary Bishop, Jose Gomez, dedicated the Church on August 28, 2003. On this momentous occasion of the dedication of the fourth church building of the parish family of St. Stephen, we are mindful of our consolidated efforts to five glory to God in all things, including the building of this church. The current number of households in the parish number more than 1000. This temple stands not only for the benefit of the parish family of St. Stephen, but also for the entire community of Glenwood Springs and all those who visit here. Almighty God has recognized the countless hours and the immense sacrificial gifts flowing forth from this community. God has assured us that through sacrifice comes a tremendous outpouring of grace. Today and for many years to come, let us open our hearts as never before to receive this grace. Through the patronage of St. Stephen and the watchful care of our Blessed Mother, we pray that God's mercy through our Lord Jesus Christ will flow forth from this Church to all of us who worship here. Over the past 112 years, St. Stephen has been served by 22 pastors. Two deacons have served this parish. The Knights of Columbus, Altar and Rosary Society, Hearts and Hands Senior Ministry and volunteers provide many services to the parish. We now have an Adoration Chapel build on the 4th level of the church. It opened in May of 2010. God has showered St. Stephen Church with many blessings since the first Mass was offered in this "mountain village" on April 14, 1885. May He continue to bless us for many more years to come!

FACES OF ST STEPHEN: Angela & Araceli

For the past three years the sister team of Angela Manriquez and Araceli Villela have been giving glory to God through their ministry of flower arranging.

Every Friday, they come to the church with bundles of blooms destined for the sanctuary.

“God is everything,” said Angela. “We like to make things beautiful for God.”

As they prepared the arrangements for Trinity Sunday, the sisters chose roses in shades of yellow and peach. Because we are in the liturgical season of Ordinary Time, they chose a more restrained design than they might create for liturgical high seasons like Christmas, Easter, and Confirmation.

This past weekend’s display featured a singular floral focal point.

In the process of arranging, Angela trims stems to adjust the lengths, while Araceli helps, giving guidance for balance and design.

After three years, their teamwork flows organically.

Araceli explains they learned floral composition on the fly.

“In the beginning, we had a few disasters,” she said. “Some of the arrangements were too top-heavy and fell over, spilling water and flowers everywhere.”

As they place the rose stems, Angela muses that sometimes the bouquets seem sparse at first when they set them before the altar on Friday evenings.

“By the next day though, the petals open up and fill in the empty spaces. We like to think God is taking our small gift and making it more beautiful.”

The flower ministry is supported by generous donors who appreciate the beauty of an altar decorated with love and care. Thank you to Angela and Araceli for being the hands of this beautiful ministry and for all those who support it financially.

“To the heights!” As St. Pier Giorgio Frassati famously exclaimed, reflecting on how the spiritual journey is a lot like climbing a mountain.

Indeed! Tomorrow evening, we’ll hike to the summit of Red Mountain in Glenwood Springs for our first Mass on the Mountain of the summer season.

Those who have been, know the exhilaration of making the climb. Every step, every drop of sweat, is worth the effort. Along the way, we will travel with fellow pilgrims to the heights!

At the summit, surrounded by the beauty of creation—with snowcapped Mt. Sopris in the distance—Fr Matt will celebrate Mass for us.

Join us for this incredible St Stephen experience.

Plan to leave enough time to hike at a comfortable pace and arrive up top by 6:30 p.m., when Mass begins.

Remember to bring water and sun protection.

To the heights!

Celebrate the Sacred Heart of Jesus in June♥️

On June 11, 2026, the U.S. bishops will consecrate our nation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus as part of the commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. All Catholics are invited to unite in this historic act of prayer and trust in Christ's love and mercy.

June has long been dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Consider honoring the Sacred Heart this month by:

-Praying a Novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus (starts June 3)
-Praying the Morning Offering
-Displaying an image of the Sacred Heart in your home
-Spending time in Eucharistic Adoration
-Joining the June 11th USCCB consecration
-Attending First Friday Mass which honors the Sacred Heart
-Attending Mass on June 12, the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus
-Praying the Litany of the Sacred Heart

Congratulations to the high school seniors who attended Mass on Trinity Sunday and received a special “missionary” blessing from Fr. Matt.

In his homily, Fr. Matt asked graduates the point of doing anything? Why go to school? To get into college. Why go to college? To be able to provide for myself and my family. Why provide for self and family? To be happy.

Apart from the Triune God, he explained, there is only the happiness of this world, which never fully satisfies. We were created for something greater: union with the Godhead and eternal life in heaven. Our time on earth is only a foretaste of what is to come.

He urged seniors and parishioners to know and understand their faith, pointing out that it is easy to fall into error when we do not know what we believe.

As they embark on the next chapter of their lives, pray that the Holy Trinity guide and protect our valley graduates wherever their paths may take them.

Many thanks to Anne-Marie Kelley who organized the Senior Mass.
